Emma Watson Wants to Do an Eco-Friendly Beauty Line With Lancôme

Posted: 13 May 2011 06:47 AM PDT

Emma Watson is quite the chatty interviewee, and in this morning’s WWD she revealed that she’d like to do an eco-conscious product range with current employer Lancome. (In case you’ve been living under a well-scrubbed rock, Watson is the face of the brand’s latest fragrance, Lancôme's Trésor Midnight Rose. Check out some outtakes from the campaign here.)

Bridesmaids Is Not About the Fashion, But Don’t Let That Stop You From Seeing It

Posted: 13 May 2011 06:14 AM PDT

Weddings are obviously a hot topic these days. There was just a pretty big one two weeks ago, remember? And just in time for wedding season, there are this season's wedding movie releases.

Bridesmaids, the Judd Apatow-produced gross-out chick flick, hits theaters today. I got to see it last week at a screening, and was asked to watch it with an eye on the fashion.

Before I get to that, a bit of background on the movie. Kristen Wiig stars as Annie, who has been BFF's with Lilian (Maya Rudolph) since they were kids. Lilian got engaged and Annie is the maid of honor. The rest of the bridal party is made up of a ragtag group of Lilian's friends, and hilarity ensues.

And this movie really is hilarious. Any film whose first line of dialogue is Jon Hamm saying, "Cup my balls" gets my vote. It does a really brilliant job of mixing absolutely disgusting scenes (without spoilers I will just say–wait for the bridal shop scene), clever dialogue, and some truly touching moments. The ending was a tribute to Sixteen Candles that made me want to weep with happiness.

Meet the New Stars of Ford’s Plus Size Model Board

Posted: 12 May 2011 04:20 PM PDT

Ford+, the plus size division of Ford models, just put out a new promotional book featuring some of their top models. What’s striking about Ford’s latest promotional push is that it’s simply comprised of beautiful high-fashiony images of models who happen to not be straight size (that means they are not a 0 and can be anywhere from a size 8 to 18). It seems to be (and hopefully is) part of trend of incorporating models who aren’t 0s and 2s–not just Crystal Renn–into the high fashion world, beyond catalogues.

Gary Dakin, the head of Ford’s plus board, has been with the modeling agency for the last 13 years. In that time span, he says the market has changed dramatically for plus size models.

“There are better clients, jobs, photographers, rates, etc.,” he says. “The girls have evolved too…they are challenged now more than ever to be better and they challenge the industry right back.”

Dakin pinpoints the moment the industry began shifting to embrace plus to around 10 years ago.

Posted: 12 May 2011 03:00 PM PDT

Reed Krakoff is having his banner moment. From the launch of his eponymous brand to that New Yorker profile to being honored by Parsons, the Manhattan designer is the talk of the industry. And maybe more importantly, the talk of those working and living outside of fashion’s bubble.

While we’ve heard lots about Krakoff’s social life and his work at Coach, we thought it would be fun to discuss a few more intimate topics, including the creative director’s love of…Ultimate Fighting? (Seriously. It’s kind of amazing.) Click through to read Krakoff’s often-surprising answers to our seven questions.

Last Night’s (Other) Party: WGACA Fetes Made Her Think and Resin’s Blinged Out Jeans

Posted: 12 May 2011 02:30 PM PDT

We’re nuts about Meredith Kahn‘s accessories line Made Her Think, and when we learned Kahn was working with Resin’s Chantel Valentene on several summer denim essentials, our jewelry-hungry ears perked up.

Last night, Soho vintage emporium What Goes Around Comes Around hosted a laid-back, intimate launch to celebrate the collaboration pieces. With Teen Vogue‘s Andrew Bevan playing deejay (nobody spins ’90s hits better), guests including Becka Diamond sipped Kanon Vodka cocktails and flipped through racks of amazing vintage tees.

Today in Weird Beauty Products: Candy that Makes You Smell Like Perfume

Posted: 12 May 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Beauty products are all about multi-tasking these days. Lipstick with SPF. Eye cream with attached undereye concealer. The next big thing that may be hitting your cosmetics counter? Candy that turns into perfume.

An American ingredients company and a Bulgarian candy company got together to make candy that will make you smell like roses. It's a different mechanism than what happens when you eat a Reese's peanut butter cup and everyone knows you just ate it. This candy, called Deo Perfume Candy, contains geraniol, the source of the scent. It works just like garlic; you eat it and there's a chemical there that can't be digested, so it leaks out through your pores.

Geraniol is an ingredient found naturally in a lot of essential oils, like rose oil, citronella, and lemon. It has a rosy scent and is commonly used in perfumes. Oh, and it has been shown to repel mosquitos (bonus!) and potentially attract honey bees (eek!).

Unfortunately, the candy will not taste like chocolate and make you smell like Chanel No.5.

Behind the Scenes at David Yurman’s New York-Inspired Fall Ad Campaign With Alex White and Arizona Muse

Posted: 12 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT

If there is such a thing as fashion heaven, it was the set of David Yurman‘s fall ad campaign last week. Imagine budding models Arizona Muse and Joan Smalls, styled by Alex White, posing in front of legendary fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh‘s lens. In a word, epic.

On a sunny Friday morning, we were lucky enough to sneak onto the set at Fraunces Tavern in the Financial District of Manhattan with this all-star team. When we first arrived at the historic tavern, we expected to be intimidated and awestruck, but instead, we felt as if we had walked into a family get together. Both White and Lindbergh have worked with the Yurman clan, who were also on set, for many years.

But though the brand assembled all of their usual suspects, there was one something different about the campaign–New York.

Would You Rather: Disney Royal Wedding Edition

We found this gem of a comparison on the interwebs this morning, and though it is slightly manipulated (hair and gown colors) to mimic Royal Wedding photos, it’s still pretty damn amazing. Which fairy tale would you rather live in–Cinderella’s, or Kate‘s?

Last Night’s Party: NAHM’s Debut is Even Cooler Than Its Hilfiger Genes

Posted: 12 May 2011 11:30 AM PDT

Nary Manivong made waves a few seasons back for his jump from relative obscurity (and, uh, homelessness) into the heart of fashion darlings. Among the converted fans was designer Tommy Hilfiger’s daughter, Ally Hilfiger, who met Manivong in 2008 after the show for his eponymous line. The two became fast friends, and Hilfiger started styling for the new brand.

It wasn’t long before Hilfiger’s recessive fashion gene kicked in, and after two seasons the two fell into a styling-cum-design partnership, with the eventual result being a joint collection: NAHM, an it-girl-cool line influenced by Poe’s “The Raven” and centered around the classic shirt dress.

The pair presented their line last night at West Village boutique A Man and a Woman to a host of friends and fashion insiders, with musical accompaniment by DJ Chelsea Leyland and champers by Nicolas Feuillatte. Raised platforms in the center of the space showcased the sheer asymmetrical button-downs and burnt-sienna dresses that fell like water off the mannequins.

Kelly Bensimon Makes a DIY Hair Martini (Yes, There’s Vodka In It)–But Does It Work?

Posted: 12 May 2011 10:30 AM PDT

Kelly Bensimon, in case you don't know her, is best known as the Real Housewife of New York who went crazy on one episode (also she was a model and is an ex-wife of Gilles Bensimon). She bounced back from that pretty well, and just made a YouTube video to teach us how to take care of our hair, all with convenient ingredients that you probably have in your liquor cabinet.

Kelly claims her hair stylist told her to mix olive oil, salt, vodka, and lemon juice to make her hair look glorious again. She then demonstrates mixing it up in her bathroom, dips her hair in it, and says, "Wish me luck!" The end. So what happened to her hair?! We may never know. Unless she gets bored this weekend and shows us.

My hair expert said that 50% of the ingredients could be helpful–olive oil for hydration and salt to clean your scalp.

Check Out Gaga As a Three Headed Little Monster on the Cover of V, Plus Excerpts From Her Defensive, Ranty Debut Column for the Mag

Posted: 12 May 2011 09:44 AM PDT

So that image of Gaga with her face covered in sequins to look like a butterfly? Not the cover of this V‘s “Asian issue.” Turns out it was only a third of the cover of V‘s issue 71, on newsstands today.

Gaga’s column for the high fashion glossy also debuted today. It’s really long. And defensive. And kinda pretentious.

Some highlights:
