Oscar de la Renta Resort 2012: Art and Craft Posted: 17 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT The hats were the first thing you noticed. They were mostly black, some blue, and inspired by Picasso‘s paper guitar sculpture. Some sat like angular little pill boxes on the model’s heads, others were more sombrero-like, drizzled with happenstance graphics that could have been brushed on that morning. But this was Oscar de la Renta Resort, not a millinery show, so we should probably talk about the clothes, too. Hailee Steinfeld is the New Face of Miu Miu Posted: 17 May 2011 05:16 AM PDT Hailee Steinfeld, who has worn designer frocks on the red carpet with more aplomb than actresses twice her age, is now the new face of Miu Miu. Prada reps and Steinfeld’s stylist Karla Welch both confirmed this to various media sources on Monday. Welch told the Daily Beast, “Miu Miu is such a perfect fit for her. Throughout awards season, they were the dresses she wanted to wear." The Fall/Winter 2011 campaign has already been shot, but no details are available about it. The 14-year-old pretty quickly won the respect of the fashion industry with her sophisticated yet entirely age appropriate red carpet choices. This Summer’s Must-See Fashion Films Posted: 16 May 2011 04:28 PM PDT lthough summer is typically blockbuster season–wherein each weekend, a movie like Bridesmaids or Super 8 is sure to dominate box offices–this summer’s lineup boasts a heavy dose of films that are a little more up our alley. Of course, we love a good comedy/action film/romcom, and any excuse to escape summer heat and sit in air conditioning for two hours is a good one. However, if we can spend those two hours learning about fashion, that $12.50 just feels a little less wasted, especially when our options are as good as the following: Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Trendspotting: Asian Influence Posted: 16 May 2011 02:00 PM PDT From V’s Asian Issue to the pages of Vogue UK, stylists and photographers are looking east for inspiration. I blame it on Marc Jacobs’ SS11 show for Louis Vuitton, but economists may blame it on the booming market in Asia. Whatever the reason, nothing is more en vogue than referencing the far east. Image of the Day: Andrej Pejic’s Dossier Cover Gets Censored by Barnes & Noble and Borders Posted: 16 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT Androgynous model Andrej Pejic is often mistaken for a girl, but this week Barnes & Noble and Borders went so far as to censor his topless Dossier cover like they would a nudie mag, reports Jezebel. Why? Because although the stores’ regulators understood that he was indeed a man, not a naked woman, they are concerned that some customers might be confused. This sea of shit, my friends, is the reason why Carine Roitfeld will never be editor-in-chief of American Vogue. Click here for Pejic‘s full Dossier spread. Posted: 16 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci is looking to buy an apartment in New York City, according to sources familiar with the designer and the situation. Unsurprisingly, he’s said to be searching for a place downtown. He’s also, we might add, openly discussing his move to Dior with certain acquaintances. Prada Debuts Its ‘From Drawings to Pictures’ Exhibit, Featuring New Minimal Baroque Sunnies Styles Posted: 16 May 2011 11:00 AM PDT Prada‘s approach to marketing–whether that’s through the internet, billboards, or within its own boutiques–is usually a mix of high fashion, high art, and high thinking. That’s why we’re psyched for the brand’s latest exhibit, “From Drawings to Pictures,” which highlights two new, limited edition styles from its Minimal Baroque eyewear collection. Instead of, you know, just putting out an advertisement, Prada asked three illustrators to interpret the glasses through drawings. Then Vogue Italia and Prada chose eight photographers to create pop/comic-inspired images of the sunnies. There’s something quite surrealist about the whole thing. The result is a mini-exhibit on display at Prada stores in Milan, New York, Madrid, Paris, London, Istanbul and Hong Kong starting tomorrow, May 17. Click through for more images from the show.

Tanning Is Super Popular Now: An Analysis of the Reasons Why (Thanks, Pippa Middleton!) Posted: 16 May 2011 09:45 AM PDT Let's face it: tan skin hasn't really gone out of style since the heyday of the ’80s when girls slathered baby oil on themselves and baked in their backyards. There was possibly a brief stint in the ’90s–the heroin chic era–when a golden tan wasn't quite as desirable, but it's never really disappeared. Now it's come roaring back with a vengeance. From the boom of Brazilian models like Gisele and Alessandra Ambrosio to the caricature of tanning portrayed on Jersey Shore, a glow has never been more desirable. And thanks to a certain very tan British family, the trend is guaranteed to stick around for awhile. Posted: 16 May 2011 09:00 AM PDT There’s a lot of great fashion coming out of Scandinavia these days, but one of the labels I was most excited to see up close and personal over Copenhagen fashion week was Won Hundred. The label, which launched in 2004, was just nominated for Danish designer of the year by the Dansk Fashion Awards. I wouldn’t be surprised if they took home the win–the line defines Danish style in the best way: simple and practical but never boring, well-constructed, well-fitting basics for men and women. Think A.P.C. but less precious. It’s the kind of label where you always want everything they put out. So we asked creative director and denim vet Nikolaj Nielsen how the line came about, what Danish style is all about, and how on earth he came up with the name “Won Hundred.” Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Penelope Cruz’s Vogue Cover Really Makes Up For That Nine Disaster Posted: 16 May 2011 08:55 AM PDT Remember that terrible Vogue cover featuring the women of Nine? Well, Penelope Cruz can quit feeling embarrassed about it, because her latest Vogue cover is one of the best we’ve seen in years. And yes, she looks fabulous dressed in Dolce & Gabbana throughout the spread. Read more at Vogue.com. Posted: 16 May 2011 08:25 AM PDT And the Bride Wore Vera: Lovely Lily Aldridge wore a custom Vera Wang gown for her marriage to Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill in Cali on Thursday. (He looked super handsome in a grey Gucci suit.) Congrats to the happy couple! {Telegraph} J.Lo’s Biggest Failure: Jennifer Lopez says the biggest disappointment of her career has been her failed fashion lines. “"I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do it right.” PS: Tommy Hilfiger is one of the backers of her new Kohl’s collection with husband Marc Anthony. {NYTimes} Carol Smith to Hearst: The former Elle chief brand officer will now run the publishing side of Harper’s Bazaar. Good for her. {Adweek} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
