Karl Lagerfeld presented his 73-look resort collection for Chanel yesterday in Cannes. All his starlet muses were there including Blake Lively, who was eagerly snapping photos of the show with her iPhone (just like us!) and gushed to WWD, “My gosh, I think I'm going to move here!” Lagerfeld’s Magnum ice cream girl Rachel Bilson, Clemence Poesy, and Alexa Chung were also among the 200 attendees.

The runway was packed with top models–including vets like Stella Tennant and Kristen McMenamy, who walked the runway in a high-cut bathing suit (and gave every girl motivation to look that good at 42).

GIGANTIC NEWS (Not Really): We’re Switching to Facebook’s Commenting System

Posted: 09 May 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Dear loyal commenters,

We’ve decided to switch commenting systems from Disqus to Facebook. We’re doing this because we want to provide you with the best tool out there, and we think Facebook is it. (For now.) Starting tomorrow, you’ll comment on Fashionista through your Facebook account. Lots of other sites, including Tech Crunch, have been using Facebook’s system for a few months.

We can’t really explain how to use the Facebook comments because there really isn’t anything to explain. It looks like a regular commenting system, except that you have to log into your Facebook account to use it. We hope that it’ll make it easier for you to have conversations about Fashionista stories with more of your friends, not just those who spend tons of time trolling the site.

We heart you guys and want you to keep commenting, so if there is anything annoying/difficult about the new system, feel free to email me on lauren@fashionista.com. Or you can voice your concerns in…the comments.

Kate Middleton’s Hairdresser Practiced Her Wedding Day ‘Do Using a $10 Plastic Tiara From Claire’s Accessories

Posted: 09 May 2011 02:32 PM PDT

Kate Middleton's long, shiny hair is one of her style trademarks, and she was universally praised for wearing it down on her wedding day instead of in some tortured updo. While it looked chic and almost effortless, a lot of practice actually went into that hairstyle.

The tool of choice? A plastic tiara that the team at the Richard Ward salon in London bought at Claire's Accessories. It cost £6.50, which is about $10. According to the Telegraph, they picked up the tiara, taped up some windows in a back office so no one could spy on them, and practiced on a personal assistant.

The Middletons' long-time hairdresser, James Pryce, also shared the secret for how they fastened the real tiara.

119 Years of Vogue, Now Available on ‘Voguepedia’

Posted: 09 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Recent development: While stalking Vogue.com yesterday for their weekly 'Most Wanted' column, we stumbled upon an unassuming link to something called 'Voguepedia.' And yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like–an encyclopedia of all things Vogue.

A Vogue spokesperson confirmed that the mag's ASME nominated site has soft-launched a resource tool, which will draw from its 119 years of archives. While the site isn’t fully functional yet (code still shows in search results and only certain search terms yield results), it’s a brilliant idea, particularly for fashion obsessives and design students cramming for all-nighters. You’ll also be able to search by designer, brand, model, personality and beauty.

Can Smart People Tell the Difference Between Real and Fake Handbags? I’m Beginning to Wonder

Posted: 09 May 2011 11:30 AM PDT

I spent the last two weeks traveling around Morocco and Spain, and unsurprisingly, I saw a lot of fake handbags. Sure, as a New York City resident, I see a boatload of fakes every year. Yet in Morocco I was simply taken aback by the vast inventory–faux LV slippers are de rigueur for locals–particularly for a country with very little advertising on its roadways and through its cities. (Even in Marrakesh you don’t see a ton of signage.) Unlike western nations like the US or Eastern countries like Japan (or even China) there just isn’t any luxury advertising.

But it was in Spain that I began to truly question my conclusions on mass counterfeiting.

Model Cailin Hill Discusses the Return of Her Blog, Canadian Tuxedos, and Why She’s Obsessed With Fage Greek Yogurt

Posted: 09 May 2011 10:30 AM PDT

Cailin Hill is a 23-year old Ford model and Ontario native who won us over with her witty, fun, and oh-so-snarky tumblr blog, Model Burnbook.

We declared our love of Cailin's clever musings last year…but in March POOF! The blog vanished and we were left wondering why. Fast forward two months and we're serendipitously standing on a SoHo street corner with Miss Hill herself. And she is every bit the cool and candid model that her blog alluded to (not to mention stunning without a stitch of makeup). We just had to find out more….

Fashion News Roundup: Karen Elson Designs for Nine West, Gaga Gets Dressed Up, and Victoria Beckham is Really Rich

Posted: 09 May 2011 09:27 AM PDT

Karen Elson for Nine West: The British model will be designing a line for Nine West's Vintage America collection (makes sense). The line launches in August and will include shoes, handbags, and jewelry with a vintage feel. {WWD, subscription required}

See Lady Gaga Covered With Babies and Dressed as a Baby: New York Magazine invited costume designers, artists, and general weirdos to come up with outfits for Lady Gaga. There are a disturbing number of baby references. (We'd love to see her in the Blonds' unicorn costume, though). {NewYork Magazine}

Victoria Beckham, Florence Welch, and Natalia Vodianova on Sunday Times' Rich List: The Sunday Times in the UK released its annual "Rich List" and lots of fashion people are enjoying the posh life. Like Posh, who earned £165 million with Becks last year. Emma Watson, Florence Welch, and models Lily Cole and Natalia Vodianova are also blessed with riches. {VogueUK}

Kate Middleton’s Favorite Wedges To Be Reissued in June and There’s Already a Wait List

Posted: 09 May 2011 08:32 AM PDT

You know those black patent espadrille wedges that Kate Middleton loves so much she was seen in them immediately before and after her wedding?

They’re by Brit label L.K. Bennett and the shoes are the latest in a string of items made golden by the Duchess of Cambridge. First it was that blue Issa dress she wore to her official engagement announcement, then it was the white ruffle Reiss dress she wore in her official engagement portraits shot by Mario Testino. And of course, her Sarah Burton for McQueen wedding dress has already spawned countless knockoffs.

Middleton’s stand-by L.K. Bennett Greta wedges (£150) are now being reissued and appropriately renamed ‘The Kate.’

Drugstore Beauty: NYC New York Color (Plus, the Secret to Buying Drugstore Foundation)

Posted: 09 May 2011 07:57 AM PDT

hile we may all occasionally dream about Dior and drenching ourselves in La Mer, don't discount the drugstore. We love posh products here at Fashionista, but we also love a deal. To that end, we're highlighting drugstore beauty brands that can hold their own against their more expensive counterparts.

Our first pick? NYC New York Color cosmetics. The prices range from $0.99 to $4.99 and you can find the brand in drugstores across the country. NYC New York Color was a small brand until they were bought by Coty in 2007. With the power, might, and research capabilities of a big cosmetics company behind them, the brand spread across the country.
