See Michelle Obama in an Oprah-esque Ralph Lauren Gown Posted: 26 May 2011 05:50 AM PDT
She went all-American in her choice of Ralph Lauren with a (probably) unintentional nod to Oprah, the queen of cleavage and off-the-shoulder ball gowns. While Mrs. O isn’t endowed with the same assets as the other O, she looked slim, sleek, and sophisticated. Topping it all off with a tangle of diamonds, a smoky eye, and some killer lashes, it was a fitting end to a sartorially and politically successful trip. Jake Davis Directs Vanessa Carlton’s Super Stylish New Video Posted: 25 May 2011 04:00 PM PDT In an age where latex unitards, neon-colored hair and bras that shoot either bullets or whipped cream (Gaga, Katy Perry, respectively) have become standard fare for songstresses, it’s refreshing to see that at least one female singer isn’t afraid to be, well, normal. Enter Vanessa Carlton, whose just-debuted video for her latest single “Carousel” takes a decidedly different approach, drawing on personal style, street wear, and vintage clothing as inspiration (instead of say, bondage, aliens and childrens’ toys). But don’t take the word “normal” to mean “boring”–Carlton’s video has some serious fashion cred. Commercial Sunscreens Get Bashed By Environmentalists: Check Out Their Green Picks Posted: 25 May 2011 03:30 PM PDT Sunscreen is a no-brainer in the summertime. Or is it? We've talked to dermatologists about sunscreens and how to choose one, but the conversation is decidedly more complex than that. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a lobbying group and think tank, stays on top of environmental concerns. It's not a huge fan of sunscreens (though they acknowledge that they're necessary), and just released its annual sunscreen report. They profiled over 1,700 products and claim that 80% of these aren't safe. Would You Rather…? The Michelle Obama Vs. Jackie Kennedy at Buckingham Palace Edition Posted: 25 May 2011 03:00 PM PDT
A reader on the vigilant on the Mrs. O blog noticed that Jacqueline O (then Kennedy) wore a very similar look to Buckingham Palace in 1961. Both First Ladies wore white dresses and long white gloves to visit Buckingham Palace (it is traditional attire for the Palace, after all.) Mrs. ) has been hitting all the right notes lately, but the Kennedy legend is hard to challenge. So, who do you think did it better? Michelle’s V-neck halter, or Jackie’s bow-capped sleeveless? Posted: 25 May 2011 02:30 PM PDT Oprah Winfrey might be known for gracing every single cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, but over the years she’s lent her likeness to several publications, from Vogue (“If you want to be on the cover of Vogue and [editor-in-chief] Anna Wintour says you have to be down to 150 lbs. – that’s what you gotta do,” she told People once) to Jet (a still from the “wagon of fat” episode). Image of the Day: Katy Perry’s Awesomely Bad ’80s Explosion Posted: 25 May 2011 01:30 PM PDT Usually anything but awkward, Katy Perry now has us all remembering why we hit the ground running after high school and never looked back (you guys did that too, right?). On the cover for her new single, T.G.I.F., she channels the best of the worst retro styles, from her blue eyeliner and fluorescent pink everything to the oversize glasses and denim vest…wait, is this mocking the ’80s? Or is it just a hipster ad for Spring 2011? Just kidding, we’d never confuse those teased bangs and crimped hair for modernity (that is, if we’re excluding most runway hairstyles). A lady bag in fluorescent blue, a long plaid dress that isn’t too ’90s redux, and a cherry red topcoat that looks more proper than prim are just a few examples of the site’s Fall 2011 offerings. Would You Rather…? The Nicole Kidman Vs. Rihanna Side Braid Edition Posted: 25 May 2011 10:00 AM PDT Ever since Alexander Wang showed long side braids for Spring 2010, followed by Miu Miu weeks later, the trend has been on an unstoppable rise. From hip girls on the LES right on up to Nicole Kidman, the side braid has left the realm of cult hairstyle and is officially in the mainstream. Rarely, however, do we get the opportunity to compare the follicle follies of actual ginger Nicole Kidman and faux ginger Rihanna…. So, before the side braid meets its inevitable demise in lieu of the long bob, we ask: Would you rather see Nicole or RiRi with the long red side braid?
