Michelle Obama Stuns in Tom Ford at Buckingham Palace; Could It Be Her Best Black Tie Look To Date? Posted: 25 May 2011 05:47 AM PDT Michelle Obama may have received mixed reviews for the busy Barbara Tfank get-up that she wore yesterday to meet Prince William and Kate Middleton, but the white Tom Ford evening gown she wore to the state dinner at Buckingham Palace last night has elicited nothing but universal praise from the discerning British press. The Daily Mail heralded the First Lady’s look as “her most stunning look yet” and noted that it recalled the famous white one-shouldered Jason Wu she wore on the night of her husband’s inauguration. Of course, we agree wholeheartedly with British press–it’s one of Michelle Obama’s most dazzling looks to date. Furthermore, it’s the first time we can recall Mrs. O wearing Tom Ford, and she paired his white creation with over-the-elbow evening gloves–the better to show off those famously toned arms. “Burgers and Nails” Tumblr Mixes Our Two Favorite Things: Food and Manicures Posted: 24 May 2011 02:52 PM PDT Everyone’s discovered the brilliant Tumblr “Burgers and Nails” today, including us. We have also spent a disproportionate amount of time analyzing each and every photo. If you haven’t paid it a visit yet, some advice: 1) Don’t look at it if you’re hungry. 2) Don’t look at it if you’re a vegetarian. The burgers are very graphic. Anyway, we love this concept of beauty plus food. We’re hoping that more celebs will lend their phalanges to this project. Adele is there. This would be a brilliant vehicle for Gaga and Deborah Lippmann to do a crazy beauty spread. While the nail art is not the best we’ve seen, the big burgers it’s wrapped around really elevate the whole experience. Anyway. We’re inspired. And hungry. Cindi Leive Gets Down and Dirty in the Name of Engagement Chicken Posted: 24 May 2011 02:34 PM PDT Last evening Gilt City held a sold-out cocktail party fêting Cindi Leive's recent foray into cookbook writing, and to our unexpected chagrin Glamour's editor-in-chief pulled a Paula Deen when getting rather intimate with raw chicken. 100 Recipes Every Woman Should Know is filled with foolproof culinary ideas, and for skeptics who think such a title lacks audience, think again–it was a New York Times' bestseller for two consecutive weeks. Held in a midtown kitchen event space (who knew such places existed?), Gilt City subscribers giddily crowded around Leive as she prepared the book's signature, "Engagement Chicken." The energetic editrix (dressed in Stella McCartney's enviable Resort florals) explained to us, "One of our fashion editors gave this recipe to an assistant who made it for her boyfriend, after eating he it dropped to his knees and proposed!" The recipe has spawned four more Glamour Girl engagements with an additional 75 readers having written to the mag in appreciation of Engagement Chicken's magical powers. Sally’s Styling Seminary: The Fashion Show Process Part 1–Looks Posted: 24 May 2011 01:45 PM PDT This past February I had the pleasure of working with one of my favorite menswear designers, Antonio Azzuolo, styling his Fall Winter 2011 presentation at NYC Fashion Week. Antonio has been gracious enough to allow me to share a photographic documentation of our working process for the presentation. Rather than writing a long description about the process, as I have for this column in the past, I thought it would be cool to show you guys the pictures we take each step of the way instead. This way you can begin to see how the process takes shape in the stylist/designer working relationship. The looks process is the first step of putting the show together. It is different from fittings because the stylist is trying the outfits on one model, instead of various models. The looks model starts to disappear, and a stylist can just see the clothes. Moschino Makes Accessories for Your Puppies Posted: 24 May 2011 01:15 PM PDT I really want a puppy. Ideally, a puppy that looks exactly like Blake Lively’s teacup malitpoo. (My friend also has a teacup maltipoo, Larry, who I’m equally obsessed with.) Anyway, if you like to spend money on your puppy–which I surely would if I actually had one–look no further than Moschino. The Italian label has teamed up with Yoox.com on an adorable collection of collars, ID tags, and leases for your pooch, starting at $30. Posted: 24 May 2011 12:38 PM PDT Were you wondering who on earth would wear Viktor and Rolf‘s fall collection? The collection that was worn by models who had their faces painted bright red (face paint that may or may not have sent Lindsey Wixson home with an allergic reaction)? Because it’s obviously Lady Gaga. She wore one of Viktor and Rolf’s leather jackets with starburst epaulet’s on Letterman last night, a mask, some crazy eye makeup and very little else. “I only liked the jacket, so I decided that’s all I would wear,” Gaga explains to Dave when he asks, confusedly, “What are you wearing? I mean, what aren’t you wearing?” The hilarious interview continues from there. Gaga tries, unsuccessfully, to convince Dave he should wear only underpants. She get distracted by Dave’s orange tie and pinstripes, tells him he’s “actually quite fashionable” and asks, with a dramatic hand wave, “Does someone style you?” (Gaga knows about fashion and writes a column about it, see.) Turns out it’s Sue and Natalie. Props are given to Sue and Natalie. Then Gaga eats paper. Forget About Mascara. Eyelash Treatments Go High Tech Posted: 24 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT Mascara is a must-have for many women because of its eye-opening, flirty effect. Cosmetics companies release new formulas and brushes at a dizzying pace, but the new trend in eyelashes is decidedly more high tech. Yes, you can always add falsies to amp up what God gave you, but they're high maintenance and fragile, not to mention almost impossible to apply on your own. There are lots of new options out there to get thicker, longer lashes, from semi-permanent salon treatments to growth stimulators. A good mascara will always be a girl's best friend in a pinch, but sometimes your lashes need some extra oomph. Click through to see some of the new options for lash enhancement. Posted: 24 May 2011 11:33 AM PDT I’ve been on a couple photo shoots in the past, but nothing as crazy-glamorous as yesterday’s at Milk Studios. Not only did I get my makeup done and my hair blown out, but Rankin–yes, the Rankin–took my photo. You see, the legendary photographer has an exhibit opening at Milk today, as well as a new project where he’s photographing 100 people for $100 a pop from June 1-5. As a nice little perk, Milk and Rankin’s team invited editors over yesterday to get their portraits done. How Daisy Fuentes Went From MTV VJ to Fashion Mogul Posted: 24 May 2011 10:30 AM PDT Between Martha Quinn and Carson Daly came Daisy Fuentes, arguably the most famous MTV VJ ever. She looked like a model, worked the camera like an actress, and made the whole idea of being an on air personality for the (then) music fueled channel a lot more glamorous. But that was long ago. Since Fuentes left MTV, she’s been plenty busy with other television work. (Did you know she was one of the first Hispanics to be a Revlon girl?) Yet she’s become, in a way, more well-known for her Kohl‘s fashion empire–which launched in 2004 and has since made over $800 million in sales–than for her work as a personality. And she’s okay with that. What was once a side project to help build her personal brand–as well as her personal worth–is now Fuentes’ serious passion. We recently caught up with the exceedingly friendly star to talk fashion, fame, and why she’ll never do a reality show. Fashion News Roundup: Joe Zee Gets Picked Up, a Topshop Pop-Up, and a Boy for Carla? Posted: 24 May 2011 09:53 AM PDT All on the Line Continues: Joe Zee’s fashion reality TV venture for Sundance has turned out to be as successful as the designers he’s helped. All on the Line has officially been picked up for a second season of entertaining designer rescue missions. {WWD} Mary-Kate as Me: We love a good Olsen twins photo shoot and we love a good Terry Richardson photo shoot. Combine the two and we’re pretty much in heaven. Think fur coats, big glasses and lots of thumbs up. {Terry Richardson’s Diary} Secret Shopping: This Thursday, there will apparently be a “secret” pop-up shop inside the Topshop store in Soho (as well as Oxford Circus for any Londoners). It will stock special collaboration items from Pamela Love, Nasir Mazhar, Meadham Kirchhoff, and Ann-Sofie Back and will be located…somewhere near a florist? {Racked} Gaga Needs Help: If you missed The View yesterday, here is a video of Lady Gaga’s interview, including her having to be helped onto the stage by two men and almost falling when trying to hug Barbara Walters because her shoes are so insanely tall. {Styleite} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Who is Behind Andre Leon Talley’s New Reality Show Pilot? Posted: 24 May 2011 08:30 AM PDT It was hard not to notice the cameras trailing Andre Leon Talley at the Savannah College of Art and Design this past weekend. Talley, who’s a member of SCAD’s board and was in town for the art school’s annual senior fashion show and a panel with good friend Manolo Blahnik, was reportedly filming his very own reality show. But since it’s yet to be picked up by a particular channel–we would have heard about it at last week’s Upfronts if it was debuting this fall–we’re wondering: Who’s behind this new venture? Three possibilities: Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 24 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT Fashion has been generous and compassionate towards Japan in wake of the country’s recent disasters, but no company so much as Uniqlo, whose chairman and CEO donated $12 million of his own money to relief efforts. In addition to millions of dollars more in clothes and funds that the company donated, it's now teaming up with an A-list group of designers and celebs to do the now-ubiquitous T-shirt design collaboration. According to a release sent out by the retailer, ten designers and celebs created t-shirts, with proceeds benefiting the Japanese Red Cross. The high profile celebs include Lady Gaga, Karl Lagerfeld, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Alber Elbaz, Blake Lively, Charlize Theron, Cyndi Lauper, Victoria Beckham, and Orlando Bloom. The shirts will retail for $19.90 and are available starting June 25. We’re partial to Alber’s hearts, Gaga’s characters, and Karl’s wash of color. Click through the gallery to check out the designs.
