‘Freedom’ Redux? Naomi Campbell and More Supermodels To Reunite For Duran Duran Music Video

Posted: 20 May 2011 07:02 AM PDT

One of the defining supermodel moments of the ’90s (1990 to be precise) was undoubtedly George Michael’s iconic ‘Freedom’ video that starred Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz, and Cindy Crawford. Kate Moss even recently lamented to the Telegraph that she missed out on starring in the video, saying “That would have been amazing.”

But maybe she’ll have a shot at the next supermodel music video. Grazia is reporting that Naomi Campbell is rounding up her supermodel friends to star in a new “fashion-inspired” music video for Duran Duran, set to film next week in the south of France. Conveniently, they’re all around as they just walked (or, in Lindsey Wixson’s case, fell) in her Fashion for Relief show.

Justin Bieber Launches a Fragrance To Bring His Lady Fans ‘Closer To His World’; Terry Richardson Will Shoot the Campaign

Posted: 20 May 2011 05:39 AM PDT

Finally! Justin Bieber has moved beyond scented dog tags and is giving us a proper fragrance that we can spritz to our heart's content. Called "Someday," it is a fruity floral scent and will be available in June pretty much everywhere.

"Let's be real, the way a girl smells is very important to a guy!” the Biebs told WWD. “I have such a deep connection with my fans, so creating a fragrance that I personally love is another way I can bring them closer to my world."

Before They Were Supermodels They Were Super Adorable Kids

Posted: 19 May 2011 03:01 PM PDT

There’s just something inherently enjoyable about looking at old baby photos. It’s fun to see what people looked like when they were littler people. I saw this fancy gif on Fashin of all these supermodels morphing into their little kid selves and thought I’d troll the fashion webz for photos of today’s top models before they were catwalk-strutting, glossy-page gracing, campaign-landing beauties.

Take a look.

Last Night’s Parties: Maripol Celebrates Her Legacy, Chloe Sevigny Celebrates Hugo Boss

Posted: 19 May 2011 02:45 PM PDT

One of the people Lady Gaga just name checked as a seminal "author in the library of pop culture" hosted a book signing last night. No, it wasn't Prince, Cindy Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, or Francis Bacon (Gaga’s words, not ours).

It was Maripol, stylist to ’80s statement-makers Debbie Harry, Grace Jones, Cher, and Madonna. Steven Meisel may have shot that iconic Like A Virgin album cover, but Maripol’s the one who slipped Madonna into the rubber bracelets and crucifix jewelry that sparked a trillion copycats. So, yah, we’d say Gaga gushing over Maripol’s cultural legacy is pretty on point.

While Maripol certainly had a heavy hand in fashion history, the woman’s still very much relevant today. Last year, she designed neon t-shirts and rubber jewelry for Marc by Marc; last night, she continued her latest moment in the sun (or torrential downpour, as luck would have it) with a jam-packed signing of her Little Red Riding Hood.

Love is Blind. We are Not. Cannes Do?

Which musician almost lost his evening beach gig thanks to just a tad too much coke? He got it together in the end and played to fans like Leo and Naomi C., even though everyone behind the scenes was in a state of panic.

Broke and the City: How to Get Your Magazine Fix Without Spending Any Money

Posted: 19 May 2011 01:45 PM PDT

Hello, everyone.
My name is Mickie and I’m Fashionista’s summer intern.
I am also very broke.

Living in New York City and working one’s way through college is not easy. It costs me nearly double to live here than it does in a non-metropolitan area city, and I’ve given up having a consistent paying job to intern (which I love!) and thus hopefully ensuring that upon graduation I will not be homeless/penniless/forced to move to Hoboken. Woe is me, perhaps. Except I know many other interns with similar problems–simply put, to intern is to be poor.

A MYHABIT-Forming Evening with Vanessa Hudgens, Plum Sykes, Jenny Lewis, and Brooklyn Decker

Posted: 19 May 2011 01:15 PM PDT

Despite the downpour, yesterday evening’s launch of Amazon.com’s new private sale website, MYHABIT.com, boasted an impressive roster of boldfaced names. Everyone from super stylist Mary Alice Stephenson to designers Rebecca Minkoff and Charlotte Ronson to Disney sweetheart Vanessa Hudgens turned up for the fête. All sported perfectly-coiffed hair (celebs–they’re not just like us!). The site, which offers major markdowns on designer duds, has smartly upped their fashion cred by teaming with the CFDA. Accordingly, both the organization’s Executive Director Steven Kolb and President Diane von Furstenberg were out to support the site.

Everything You Need to Know About the Beauty Industry, From Airbrushing to Plastic Surgery to Marketing to Beauty Ideals

Posted: 19 May 2011 12:45 PM PDT

Ever wonder how beauty marketers make products perfectly appealing? We got to sit in a room full of those guys while they discussed marketing and branding at WWD's Beauty Forum earlier this week. Sound boring? On the contrary–it was completely fascinating. This is an industry full of really smart people who know how to get you to buy things, and they have very a unique window into women's psyches.

We picked up a lot of insight and wisdom during the full-day forum and naturally we'll share it.

Prabal Gurung You Can Actually Afford: See the Designer’s Collaboration For J.Crew

Posted: 19 May 2011 12:26 PM PDT

As part of J.Crew‘s partnership with the CFDA, the specialty retailer asked the winner (Billy Reid) and runners up (Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo) of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Billy Reid’s menswear collection for the preppy purveyor was up last month, and now, finally, something us ladies can wear: Prabal Gurung. And for once, thanks to J.Crew’s lower price points, it’s Prabal Gurung we can actually afford. Or at least we can try to rationalize spending $198 on a pair of pants. Because those pants are awesome.

The collection is available for pre-order on J.Crew’s site now, as is a cute photo collage of Gurung’s mood board for his collection, which is comprised of silk blouses, a suit, a dress and a pair of tuxedo pants, and is overall bow-happy but in a good way. Prices range from $198 to $450 and we suggest placing your orders ASAP as the collection is extremely limited–only 50 pieces were produced for some items. Take a look.

Check Out These Dresses Made From Nursing Home Supplies (Think Adult Diapers and Syringes)

Posted: 19 May 2011 11:15 AM PDT

The University of Chicago alumni magazine is an unlikely source of inspiration for us, but this month they've outdone themselves by featuring a project by Amy Zucker (MFA '98). Amy is a Registered Nurse and case manager who works with the elderly in nursing homes. She fabricated a series of dresses out of medical supplies which are meant to be a statement about the elderly and their "tenuous" access to medical care. We're just happy that Amy found a way to funnel her creativity. (See, Amy's mom! That fine arts degree is totally paying off.) She didn't use any toilet seat covers, luckily, otherwise we'd have to do an Adventures in Copyright.

Click through to see her creations and how they compare to what some fashion designers are doing these days.

Is Pierre Hardy’s Spring Collection for Gap His Last?

Posted: 19 May 2011 10:15 AM PDT

It’s no shock that our favorite thing about the Gap right now is the Pierre Hardy-designed shoe collection. Sadly, we’ve heard from up high that the French cobbler is not working working on a fall capsule for the specialty retailer.
