Best Dressed: Elle in Valentino, Dree in Dior and Michelle in Azzaro

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 03:00 PM PST

This week Elle Fanning, who might be becoming our favorite Fanning (sorry, Dakota), looked adorable and age-appropriate in Valentino. Dree Hemingway was effortlessly chic in dressed down Dior. Thandie Newton rocked a daring dress by Peter Pilotto. Michelle Williams sparkled in Azzaro. And Daisy Lowe looked amazing in this dramatic Elie Saab gown.

The Best and Worst of Magazine Gift Guides

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 02:30 PM PST

Jingle bells, deck the halls, light the menorah and–most important–start buying those holiday presents!

December means not only gifts, but also gift guides. (If Oprah didn’t give us her holiday O-List, how would you know that Aunt Helen would like some sweet-potato butter?) These guides can be helpful, but they’re an awful lot to plow through. To save you the work, StyleList has sifted through the best (and a couple of the worst, just for fun) of the magazine holiday gift guides.

New Vogue Russia EIC Puts Putin’s Reputed Mistress on the Cover and No One Likes It

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 02:01 PM PST

The January 2011 issue of Russian Vogue is out, the first under new EIC Viktoria Davydova, and fans of the mag are already in an uproar about the direction she’s taking it.

To start, Davydova’s chosen an unconventional, not to mention controversial, covergirl in Alina Kabaeva. She’s not a model and she’s not exactly a celebrity. She is a decorated rhythmic gymnast (she took home the gold at the 2004 Olympics), but she is better known as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s rumored mistress. Two years ago, when Putin was still President and still married to wife Ludmilla (as he still is today), stories circulated in the press that Putin was to marry Kabaeva. To stoke the fire a bit, the headline between Kabaeva’s legs translates to “Her Main Victory,” a Russian reader tells us.

Davydova came from Tatler, where celeb covers are de rigeur (Jennifer Lopez is currently on the cover of Russian Tatler), so that she put a non-model on the cover is not much of a surprise.

But after years under the talented direction Aliona Doletskaya, who is rumored to be headed to POP after resigning from Vogue Russia, to say that fans are disappointed with Davydova and her first cover for the mag would be a gross understatement. It doesn’t help that Kabaeva is wearing the same gold Balmain dress that has already seen countless covers. Five pages of comments have already amassed over at the online forum The Fashion Spot bemoaning the new Russian Vogue.

Some highlights?

Knotty and Nice: Thom.Dolan Debuts at Saturdays Surf

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 01:00 PM PST

Having cut her creative teeth at Bill Blass, Armani, and Ralph Lauren, designer Thomasine Dolan's self-proclaimed "love of haberdashery" shines through in her debut collection's preppy oxford shirts and adorable madras swimwear, which we previewed last night at Saturdays Surf.

"It really started with the bikinis—and the clothes followed," the designer explained of her line, set to be carried this spring at both the downtown surf boutique and Steven Alan.

Though she had never tried her hand at cutting bathing suits before, Dolan stressed that each look in her line is meant to be layered atop one of the bikinis—a more dressed-up take on the typical beach cover-up. "Buttoned-up can be really sexy if the fit is right!" she said.

Last Night’s Party: Madonna-rama at La Perla

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 12:02 PM PST

It almost felt like a cruel joke on Mother Nature's part when we headed out to a lingerie launch in last night's below-freezing weather, but the gorgeous goods on display were well worth braving the chill. La Perla's Upper East Side flagship was the site of an intimate (pun intended) cocktail event for the presentation of Jean Paul Gaultier's Collection Createur—a line the French design legend crafted exclusively for the luxury lingerie label.

Eleven Questions for Fred Butler

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 11:36 AM PST

Fred Butler‘s origami accessories have landed her commissions on the pages of i-D, Dazed & Confused, Vogue and V magazine not to mention onto Lady Gaga’s head in the diva’s video for “Telephone.” Photographed last year by Nick Knight, the soft-spoken prop stylist turned accessories designer is a longtime London fashion scene standout with her unwavering head-to-toe monochromatic outfits. Launched in 2008, Butler’s line of colorful op-art mutations have been worn by musicians Patrick Wolf, Little Boots, Beth Ditto, La Roux and Skunk Anastasie. Stocked at London’s jewelry cache Kabiri and with a hush-hush high-street collaboration in the works, Fred takes a few minutes to talk to Fashionista about her music-fashion collaborations, designing in London and a new era of dressing.

Vogue Opens Its’ Doors to Give Readers the “Vogue Experience”

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 09:09 AM PST

You didn’t think we were talking about Anna Wintour and US Vogue, did you?

No, it’s Vogue Italia that is going transparent. The mag is inviting readers in for a sort of open house to get a rare behind-the-scenes look at how the magazine is put together, and the chance to meet with editor in chief Franca Sozzani as well as boldface names in Italian design like Donatella Versace and Angela Missoni.

“The Vogue Experience” celebrates the launch of Sozzani’s new book, I Capricci Della Moda ("The whims of fashion"), which is a collection of her blog posts on the mag’s site where she details everything from her love of Uggs in a blizzard to her musings on fashion and feminism. Apparently the editrix has been criticized for the stunt and took to her blog today to write, “It upsets me that some people think that my doing this is just a commercial thing or making Vogue too democratic.”

Vogue” and “democratic” are two words we never expected to hear in the same sentence. But Sozzani’s got good intentions.
