Last Night’s Parties: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Dinner with Kate Spade NY, and Dessert at Kiehl’s

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 03:50 PM PST

Yesterday’s parties were the best kind of parties because they were all centered around good food.

I started off my day with breakfast at Tiffany. Really. As an Audrey Hepburn fan who has watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s countless times, the whole thing was a little surreal. Tiffany treated about 20 bloggers to a lovely breakfast in the actual store before it opened. We feasted on smoked salmon with our mouths and diamonds with our eyes. Not a bad way to start the day.

From the Glossy Archives: US Vogue, November 1988 (Anna’s First Issue As EIC)

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 03:30 PM PST

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about looking through old magazines. The glossy pages we thumbed through when we were in our impressionable tween and teen years told us who was cool and how to look cool (and we believed them).

If Tavi Gevinson’s recent announcement that she will be reviving a Sassy-esque mag with Jane Pratt showed us anything, it’s that the girls who grew up reading Sassy are fiercely loyal to the mag that shaped their identities in a real and lasting way. Lauren calls Jane Pratt her “personal Jesus,” and wrote that “Sassy is the reason [she] became interested in fashion as a 5th grader.” In her open letter to Tavi Gevinson and Jane Pratt on our blog crush The Hairpin, former Gawker scribe Emily Gould said as much, writing, “Sassy and, later, Jane got into my brain when it was at its most malleable; these magazines were such a profound influence on the way my tastes in books, magazines, bands, cute boys, and first-person writing developed that I hear their editorial voice in my head at the oddest moments, for example recently I was doing my laundry and I remembered a Jane tip about how you can use, and I think I quote? “like, half the amount of detergent” you’re currently using. I remember whole blocks of text from “Tiffani-Amber Thiessen: Something Does Not Compute.” I became the kind of writer and person I am in part because of these magazines.”

So it’s with an understanding of the powerful and formative hold that the glossies we once pored over still have on us that we launch our newest series, “From the Glossy Archives.” We’re pulling old glossies–from Sassy to Vogue to Pop–from our bedroom shelves and from eBay and scanning in the funniest ads, the most surprising stories, and most salient editorials so we can all reminisce together. And for the true magazine nerds out there (ourselves included), we will, of course, include the masthead so we can watch the editorial musical chairs play out throughout the years.

First up? We figured US Vogue from November 1988, Anna Wintour’s first issue as editor-in-chief, was a good place to start. The mag is a gold mine so we’ll dispense the nuggets piecemeal starting with the masthead, awesomely ’80s ads, and a feature that is an ode to Alaïa (before Alaïa and Wintour hated each other). Editorials to follow.

Take a look.

Exhibition A: Art You Can Afford

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 02:55 PM PST

Last night the Gagosian store uptown fêted Exhibition A, a new project by Cynthia Rowley, Bill Powers, Laura Martin, and Gabby Munoz that aims to bring art collecting to the public at a lower price point. And we’re not talking about Cynthia Rowley Baid-Aids here (though I was wearing one yesterday), I mean museum-worthy works of contemporary art.

Including artists like René Ricard, Hanna Liden, Richard Phillips and Josephine Meckseper, Exhibition A sells special edition prints of works from $100-$500. The company keeps it exclusive by only offering the works for 2-4 weeks and only printing as many works as are purchased, meaning your collecting nemesis can’t snatch up your beloved Mark Borthwick after the sale has closed.

Fashion News Roundup: YSL’s Online Casting Call, Natalie Portman Covers New York Times Magazine and Nicki Minaj Got a “Booty Protector”

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 10:21 AM PST

YSL Wants YOU: Move over, Daria/Naomi/Kate, you’re being replaced by…some random person. YSL took to the internet to announce an open casting call for tall, elegant "beautiful people" aged 25 to 50. It could be you! But don’t expect a supermodel’s salary. It pays about $200. {WWD}

Natalie Portman Undresses, ’40s Screen Siren Style: Natalie Porman dons a blond Veronica Lake-esque wig in the next issue of The New York Times Magazine. In a video accompanying the story, she elegantly and quietly (not to mention inexplicably) tosses the wig on the floor, along with most of her clothes. Remember when she had a shaved head? {The Moment}

Protect the Booty: George Lopez gave Nicki Minaj a “booty protector” made out of barbed wire. When she put it on, it kind of just looked like part of her outfit. {Daily Mail}

Bryan Boy Makes Over $100,000 per year: The 24-year-old blogger pretty much has it made. He says his income comes from public appearances and advertising on his blog, which makes sense because he doesn’t have any employees to pay. Even though he could clearly afford a pretty sweet apartment, he says he’ll never move to NYC because people aren’t happy here and boys are sluttier. {The Cut}

The Top 50 Fashion Schools In The World: The Fashionista Ranking

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 10:10 AM PST

If you want to work in fashion and are about to enter college, finding the right school for you can be a difficult task. We’d like to help. So we’ve painstakingly rounded up the 50 best fashion schools in the world. (Click here for the full list.)

These are not just design schools. We've included tons of colleges and universities that offer stellar fashion business, marketing, styling, textiles, and technology programs.

Methodology: To generate our list, we spoke to students, employees at the schools, companies who hire graduates, and industry professionals. We also considered tuition costs, demographics, famous alums, and variety in programming. It's not scientific, but we tried to be as objective as possible. Keep this in mind if you don't see your favorite school here or disagree with the ranking your alma mater received. The take-home message? These schools are all amazing, or they wouldn't have made the list.

Tuition: Art and design schools are generally expensive. But you can see here that the prices range from almost $40,000 per year to free. (Yes, you read that correctly–thank you, Finland). Unless otherwise stated, the tuition you see is yearly for international students. It does not include room and board and incidentals. Also, tuition obviously changes yearly, so take it as an approximation.

How To Apply: Most of the schools have very similar application requirements, so we decided not to include them for each individual school. In general, you need a high school equivalency, letters of recommendation, essay, portfolio (for design students), interview. Some countries, for obvious reasons, have language requirements. We’ve noted where English is not the main language spoken.

Famous grads: Just because a school hasn't produced a marquee name (yet) doesn't mean it isn't good. Every single one of these schools has placed students in major fashion houses, commercial labels, and other fashion businesses. Behind every Alber Elbaz (a Shenkar alum) are 50 Jane and John Does helping everything run smoothly. And getting paid damn good money to do it.

Other: If you see an asterisk (*) it denotes a CFDA-affiliated school.

Now dive in and learn something:

Who Wants to Buy Burberry? (As in the Entire Company)

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 08:30 AM PST

Burberry is one of the few independent luxury brands in the world, and it also happens to be one of the most successful. After years of struggling to take back its plaid from British chav culture, CEO Angela Ahrendts and creative director Christopher Bailey have molded Burberry into a label of which everyone wants a piece.

Now, it seems that someone is looking to scoop up the whole thing. Reuters reports a rumor that an undisclosed bidder wants to buy the brand for nearly $10 billion. (It’s current value on the stock market is around $8 billion.)

If it’s true, who could it be?

Jason Wu Pre Fall 2011 Was Inspired by the Original Street Style Photographers

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 08:29 AM PST

Jason Wu's Pre Fall 2011 collection was inspired by Elegance: The Seeberger Brothers and the Birth of Fashion Photography, a book of photographs by the Seeberger brothers, who were essentially the Scott Schuman and Tommy Ton of the early twentieth century. Everything from the glamorous dresses to the black and white of the pictures made its way into the ladylike collection.

The colors are, compared to past collections, subtle, and gorgeous. There is an art deco feel to many of the pieces, including a blouse and shift dress with shimmering beading on the collar (photos don’t do the sparkle justice). There is a black leather dress that somehow looks more ladylike than tough. There are several skirts that are begging to be worn by Blair Waldorf and a pale green gown that belongs on a red carpet.

To me, the most lust-worthy pieces (and there were many) were the coats.

The British Fashion Awards: Who Won What

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 07:46 AM PST

At last night’s British Fashion Awards, the UK’s version of our CFDA awards (read: fashion Oscars), the ladies swept the show. According to Hilary Alexander at the Telegraph, last night’s awards were the strongest female showing since the awards were established in 1974.

Phoebe Philo, creative director for Céline, took home the top prize winning “Designer of the Year.” Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, an award decided by public vote which, according to the British Fashion Council, “recognises an individual who embodies the spirit of London and is an international ambassador for London as a leading creative fashion capital.” Naomi Campbell took home the new “special recognition” award and Lara Stone was named model of the year.

Of course the boys got a few nods, too. Here, the complete list of winners:
