Shopbop + Sephora = Boring?

This week online fashion powerhouse Shopbop and beauty retailer Sephora unveiled a new collaboration. They are co-branding an enormous makeup palette, called Color Play 5-in-1: Fashion Edition, which is–as the name suggests–actually five separate palettes. The gist is that you snap out the palette which is appropriate for whatever outfit you're wearing that day and voila! Coordinating makeup.

I adore both of these companies and shudder to think how much money I've spent at both over my lifetime, but this product is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Shopbop pulled together a lookbook of iconic styles (Ali MacGraw as the "Classic Prep," Twiggy as "London Mod"–you get the idea.) There is a small beauty close-up on each page which shows the coordinating makeup look.

After being distracted by the lovely goods for sale, I started thinking: does the average Shopbop shopper need this color-by-numbers approach to dressing and makeup?

The Best Magazine Editorials of 2010

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 10:35 AM PST

Editorials in 2010 were so extraordinary, I’ve started reading magazines from the back (sorry, advertisers!). From Vogue Paris’ 90th Anniversary extravaganza to Numero’s consistently enchanting spreads, 2010 was a year for drama. The editorials were so good, we know them by name: “Wash you face in my sink” from LOVE, “Vogue à porter” in Vogue Paris, and “La Mauvaise Education” in Numéro.

So what makes an editorial great? Teamwork. All the eds here show the best collaboration between photographer, stylist, and model.

No Riri for Topshop: After Rihanna tweeted about her lunch with Sir Phillip Green the Daily Mail speculated that lunch = Rihanna becomes Tophop’s next celebrity designer. While Topshop declined to comment on the matter, WWD has it from “industry sources” that the dinner was "purely social," and that “no fashion deal is in the works.” {WWD subscription required}

Gaga in Zoolander 2?: Thankfully, things are moving right along for Zoolander 2, and Owen Wilson has said that ‘Gaga has to be in it.’ Agreed. As long as you’re in the scene with her, Owen. {Monsters and Critics via Jezebel}

Rent the Runway to Pop Up for NYE:
Rent the Runway is setting up a pop-up shop filled with New Year’s Eve ready ensembles down on Varick St. The catch? You have a reserve a spot to shop the pop-up through Gilt City for $5. {Elle}

Gaga’s Meat Dress Tops the Telegraph‘s Worst Dressed List:
Finally, this dress ends up where it belongs (read: not as Time‘s number one fashion statement of the year). {The Telegraph}

Jacques Fath’s New Owner Installs His Daughter as Designer

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 08:00 AM PST

Cristobal Balenciaga. Pierre Balmain. Gabrielle Chanel.

Back in the day, these fashion deities had a contemporary who could have also ended up a household name: Jacques Fath. Sadly, an early death from leukemia closed the shutters on his house, lauded for its daring and dynamic designs.

Fifty-six years after Fath's death, French conglomerate Alliance Designers Group–owned by Alain Dumenil–has bought the label and installed none other than Dumenil's daughter, Laurence Dumenil, as the line’s creative director. Sure, we know what you’re thinking–and naturally we thought the same. But as she tells Fashionista, Ms. Dumenil’s not worried about the whispers regarding the nepotism that so obviously took place. Instead, she’s focused squarely on bringing the line back to its former glory. Check out our exclusive Q&A with her and view our gallery of the brand's 2011 accessories collection.
