Robin Givhan is Leaving the Washington Post for Newsweek and The Daily Beast Posted: 14 Dec 2010 02:46 PM PST Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Robin Givhan–aka the only fashion writer at a major newspaper to be taken seriously–is leaving The Washington Post after 15 years of service, according to a memo released by Yahoo! News. Givhan moved to Washington from New York two years ago to cover Michelle Obama nearly full time, but was still a fixture at the European fashion shows. She’s best known for her elegant analysis of the wardrobes of political figures, although we also privately admire her for wearing a tracksuit to an Elise Overland show. (Because once you’re that important, you can wear anything.) What’s Givhan’s next move? Shopping Site Desquval Launches With Exclusives From H. Fredriksson, Frank Tell, Lorick, and More Posted: 14 Dec 2010 01:00 PM PST In the startup world, fashion/tech is a hotspot these days, and that’s mostly because A. fashion people were slow to embrace technology until recently B. tech people don’t always get fashion and were afraid of it until recently and C. Gilt Groupe proved that a fashion/tech company could be successful. So it’s no surprise that Google recently launched Boutiques.com, that FashionStake is aiming to bring fashion investing to the masses, or that Style Trek wants its users to give designers direct feedback in a “Facebook-meets-Net-a-Porter” fashion. In the same vein as Style Trek, the recently-launched Desquval–not to be confused with Barcelona streetwear label Desigual–is using social networking to connect shoppers directly with the designers whose clothes they’re purchasing. Breaking News: Justin Bieber Will Cover Vanity Fair Posted: 14 Dec 2010 12:22 PM PST Yes, you read that correctly. A source has confirmed to us that Justin Bieber is going to be on the cover of Vanity Fair in either February or March of 2011. When we told you a while back that he was being shot for Love magazine, many of you expressed disappointment upon realizing that Bieber was being shot for a magazine and not with a gun. We don't think wishing death upon the Biebs is necessary, but we are kind of amazed by his ability to cross over from teeny bop heartthrob to a legitimate star with serious magazine editorials. Then again, the choice is not entirely shocking on Vanity Fair‘s part. Bieber is definitely one of the biggest and most relevant artists of the past couple of years and his star is continuing to rise. Reiss To Re-release Kate Middleton’s Dress, Increase Price Posted: 14 Dec 2010 11:50 AM PST Kate Middleton made headlines yesterday when she shopped her closet for her official Mario Testino-photographed engagement portraits and wore a Reiss dress from last season. (She also apparently did her own makeup–even more impressive.) As we mentioned yesterday, Reiss is, of course, re-releasing a version of the now-famous dress sometime next month to include in their SS2011 collection (even though the dress was originally AW2009). We also hear it will retail for £169 ($267), up from £159. “Kate has been a customer of Reiss for some time now and we are absolutely delighted that she chose to wear one of our dresses for such a wonderful occasion,” Reiss managing director and founder David Reiss said in a statement. “We wish both Prince William and Kate Middleton all the best for the future.” Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Brooke Shields Cried Over Jewelry Posted: 14 Dec 2010 11:13 AM PST Fashion moves people, OK? We’ve known plenty of folks who have been moved to tears after a particularly standout show (or, just Chanel). I even got misty eyed during the McQueen tribute at Naomi Campbell‘s Fashion for Relief show. Apparently, all it takes are some pretty baubles to get Brooke Shields reaching for the tissues. The actress teared up at a jewelry exhibit at the Fred Leighton store in NYC last week which featured the creations of Turkish designer Sevan Biçakçi. “I get emotional about these things,” Shields told WWD. “When there’s someone like Sevan…someone who’s an artist who sort of represents this new sensibility, when you see those two coming together, I feel like he’s in good hands [with Fred Leighton].” Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 14 Dec 2010 10:30 AM PST LONDON–The Empire in Leicester Square played host last night to the UK premiere of Burlesque, a so-so sparkle-n-sequins musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera and an army of gorgeous Swarovski-dripping bustiers designed by Michael Kaplan. The BAFTA award winning costume designer is to thank for trend-spawning films like Flashdance, Blade Runner, Pearl Harbor and the Versace and Marc Jacobs-influencing Fight Club…the man’s got range. The sparkly, indoor-use-only outfits, aside from Christina’s undeniable set of pipes, were the glue-gun that kept the film together. The true stunners included: six variations of delicate hand-linked gold chains with tiny Swarovskis whipping around in the finale; Christina’s high collared string of pearls “dress” that whipped right off her in one number; black velvet bodysuits with 1930s-inspired sequined hands over the bum and boobs. The costumes, like the score, drew inspiration from every era from the ’20s to the ’80s and will undoubtedly boost sales at Agent Provocateur. We also wouldn’t be surprised if some girls abandon the acrobatics of pole-dancing lessons for the glam athleticism of burlesque. Posted: 14 Dec 2010 10:00 AM PST Get it While You Can: Chloe Sevigny’s latest collection for Opening Ceremony is available to pre-order until December 20 on Opening Ceremony’s website. There are handbags, sunglasses, t-shirts, adorable dresses and many to die for shoes. One item we don’t quite understand, however, is a lookbook on sale for $65. If you want something from the collection, which you do, pre-ordering is probably your best bet for actually getting it, as these collections tend to sell out pretty quickly. {Opening Ceremony} Jen Brill’s Makeup Routine: Photo/Styling agent Jen Brill is the latest to be featured on Emily Weiss’ beauty blog Into the Gloss. She divulges her simple yet well thought-out beauty routines in its entirety. We’ve definitely learned a few tricks. {Into the Gloss} Hanneli’s Winter Picks: Street Style Blogger Hanneli Mustaparta has an amazing eye for others with great style as well as her own. Check out what she has her eye on this winter. Coming from someone who pretty much always looks perfect, we’d definitely take note. {The Moment} Snooki’s Shilling Slippers: Remember those huge, dirty-looking slippers Snooki wore both in and outside the house throughout Jersey Shore? It was only a matter of time before Snooki endorsed her own line of slippers. They’re bizarrely huge, come in leopard and pink and have shoelaces for some reason. To be honest though, they do look kind of comfy. {Blackbook} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Geren Lockhart Takes on London’s Food and Art Scenes Posted: 14 Dec 2010 09:30 AM PST Designer Geren Lockhart, of Geren Ford fame, is traveling up a storm this autumn, and she’s decided to tell Fashionista readers all. This installment of “Travels with Geren” takes us to London When/Where: London November 22–26, 2010 Why: Outside of Los Angeles and NYC, I have more friends in London than anywhere else, and the art is the best on the planet right now. I saw more art in the days that I was there than I have collectively all year long: in small galleries, some of the best museums, and in the street. It's sort of overwhelming how amazing it is. Best Meal: I was extremely lucky in London, each meal was the best because I got to sit down with friends I haven't seen in forever…. Here's a list of the great restaurants I visited while in London. From fancy to local, each meal was divine! Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
