Dior Launches New Beauty Site, Offers E-Commerce and Interactive Features (Directed by Sofia Coppola!)

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 07:00 AM PST

Dior.com's beauty section just got a high tech make-over. It's slicker, more interactive, and you can now purchase Dior products there (gift set, anyone?)

Some highlights?

Coppola Direction: There's an interactive pop-up book, and you can watch the Sofia Coppola-directed Miss Dior Cherie commercial. The "making of" clip is arguably cuter than the actual commercial–though the commercial is pretty darn cute.

Auction: Dior is holding an auction on site now through December 15 with some truly over the top prizes including a Dior-inspired trip to Paris (whatever that means it can’t be bad), a private makeover by a Dior show artist, and a trip to St. Maarten to visit the Dior institute. 100% of proceeds benefit Look Good…Feel Better, a charity that helps people who are undergoing treatment for cancer, and the American Cancer Society.

Make-up Tutorials: There are how-to videos for many of the products and tips for how to choose colors. There's even a feature in the Dior Addict lip gloss tab under "What's New" that allows you to upload a picture of your outfit and it will help you choose what color to wear. (I've been wearing Black-Tie Plum a lot lately).

Last Night’s Party: P.S. We Made Things With Erica Domesek and Kate Spade New York

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 04:35 PM PST

Last night we were honored to join our DIY guru Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This to fete her new book at the Kate Spade New York store in SoHo.

But since it’s Erica, she of the golden glue gun, this wasn’t your ordinary schmooze and have some drinks and eat some mini hotdogs type book party (though there were mini hotdogs and they were delicious). She put us to work. We, along with Design Sponge’s Grace Bonney, Andrew Mukamal, Lonny Magazine‘s Michelle Adams, and Style Republic Magazine‘s Brittany Law, were tasked with DIY-ing one of Kate Spade New York’s signature black leather London Totes. Sharpie and crafting site I Love To Create generously supplied us all with tons of great art supplies.

Brian Atwood Cried and Blake Lively Owned up to Her Louboutin Obsession at Last Night’s Footwear News Achievement Awards

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:30 PM PST

Blake Lively loves her some Christian Louboutin. Last night, celebrities, designers and buyers gathered at MoMa for the Footwear News Achievement Awards, which the host, Fairchild Fashion Group's Michael Atmore, described as "a tiny bit of Golden Globes…You never know what's going to happen."

Honorees included Charlotte Olympia for Emerging Talent, Ivanka Trump for Launch of the Year, Toms Shoes and Vibram for Brands of the Year, Brian Atwood for Designer of the Year, and finally, Christian Louboutin for Person of the Year.

Jessica Alba, who presented Blake Mycoskie's award for Toms, jumped on the suit trend in Dolce & Gabbana; Ivanka Trump is gorgeous and came off quite smart and business-minded; Charlotte Dellal looked amazing as usual and buddied up with Olivia Palermo. The sweetest moment was Brian Atwood's mom Yolanda presenting his award and him tearing up during his acceptance. However, the most memorable part of the evening was easily Blake Lively's ridiculously rapturous and glowing introduction to Christian Louboutin.

Club Monaco Gets it Right for Summer 2011

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:00 PM PST

Yesterday afternoon, I escaped the rain momentarily to check out what Club Monaco has in store for next summer (which can’t come soon enough). The light, beachy wears almost made me forget about the terrible weather outside and I left wanting to go on vacation–which is exactly what Club Monaco's designer did to get inspired.

For the second time, Club Monaco did a special "beach boutique" collection, for which the designer found inspiration on a trip to St. Bart's. Basically, it's an all-white (very on trend) collection of cute beach cover ups, plus this really amazing, simple long white tank dress that would look as appropriate at the beach as it would at a cocktail party. There were also a range of great imported hand woven straw totes.

The early summer collections, which will be out in April and May, include a lot of things you'd expect from Club Monaco, a few things you wouldn't and several things I loved. Occupying the first category were sequined tanks and dresses, lightweight knits and tees. Overall, there was less embellishment than I expected, which was a good thing. The brand is definitely stepping up their cool factor (as in their Carol Han-approved, Garance-shot, cool girl-modeled Fall lookbook). There was a lot of cream and nude, with pops of very light neon green. There were adorable scalloped-edge shorts, long pleated skirts, light peach-colored cardigans and white and navy horizontal striped shirts that somehow didn't look redundant.

One Step Closer (But Not There Yet): Design Protection Bill Passes Senate Judiciary Committee

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 02:18 PM PST

This morning brought news that the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously passed the “Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act,” a bill introduced three months ago by New York Senator Charles E. Schumer to provide "very limited intellectual property protection to the most original design," WWD is reporting.

If all goes well, and the bill passes the Senate and the House and becomes a law, designers will, for the first time, be able to file for copyright protection for their patterns and designs. As it stands now, copyright statute only offers protection for trademarks (like Chanel)–which can include specific prints–but not for actual cut-and-sewn patterns. When we asked Susan Scafidi, intellectual property attorney and director of Fordham’s Fashion Law Institute, to break down the implications of the bill should it pass into law she told us it could: a) protect a new design for three years after it's been put into production, b) spur creativity in mass retail, and c) stop designers–peers–from knocking each other off.

Of course, that’s a very big “if.”

Tacori 18k925: Now Available at Bloomingdale’s New York Flagship & Bloomingdales.com!

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 12:30 PM PST

It’s the holiday season, which means it’s time for presents and parties. Which also means it’s time to find something special for your mom, sister, friend…and yourself–that will add a spark of specialness to those holiday frocks.

We’d be perfectly happy with any adornment from Tacori 18k925, particularly the ruby red cocktail ring.

For our friends, we’d choose the edgy Black Onyx style.

And mom? Definitely one of the Lemon Drop Quartz pendants.

A new addition to the Tacori family, 18k925 is a bit playful, with colorfilled gemstones and unique details. The 18k gold and .925 silver metal combination that makes these pieces bold, fun and–most importantly–wearable.

And priced from $250 to $2,000, a bauble or two won’t break the bank. But they will make you feel like a million dollars.

Tacori 18k925 is now available at the Bloomingdale’s New York Flagship and Bloomingdales.com.

Sneak Peek: William Rast for Target, the Full Collection

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 11:37 AM PST

Target’s newest designer collaboration with William Rast–Justin Timberlake’s label with designer Trace Ayala–hits stores December 19.

While Target is the grand-daddy of designer collaborations, the insane hype surrounding Lanvin for H&M (it keeps on going as folks are asking for over $1,500 for tees on eBay) threatens to overshadow Target’s latest GO International designer collaboration. But it shouldn’t. Because William Rast for Target is not only more affordable than Lanvin for H&M, but the pieces are also really wearable. William Rast’s whole country vibe really makes sense now what with Canadian tuxedos being “in” and all. And our friends at Racked raise another good point re. William Rast for Target over Lanvin for H&M: “[B]ig name designer collabs have become so ubiquitous and so well-publicized that when, say, you wear that Lanvin for H&M dress, everyone knows exactly where you got it and how much you paid. The problem is designers have stocked their high-low collaborations with statement styles—all the better for branding—which are instantly recognizable, making the wearer that-girl-in-the-high-low-collab-dress in the room, you know? The William Rast for Target collection…[doesn't] totally scream high-low collab.”

Stand outs include a high-waisted embellished skirt for $39.99, light wash chambray button-downs (my favorite) for $34.99 and faux-leather shorts for $39.99. Another nice thing about this collection? Lots of nice basics–like denim and plaid button-downs–for dudes, too.

Take a look.

Life With Natalie Joos!

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 10:37 AM PST

Casting director Natalie Joos has been a fashion industry fixture for years, and a favorite subject of Tommy Ton and Scott Schuman.

But the March 2010 launch of her blog, Tales of Endearment, has made her star shine even brighter. A mix of vintage shopping expeditions with fashion friends and sneak peeks inside industry heavyweight’s closets, Tales of Endearment has been a Fashionista favorite from the start. And it’s made Natalie a “fashion household” name.

We wanted to know more about Natalie’s day job, why she started the blog, and where she gets all those amazing vintage pieces, so we popped by her home office one Monday in November while she was doing a casting.

Her Williamsburg apartment was clean and cool, but not pretentious, kind of like Natalie! And her cats, Mohammed and Tyson, made the whole visit even better. Here’s what she had to say:

Fashion News Roundup: Julianne Moore Stars in Lagerfeld’s Calendar, A Backpack Inspired by Saved by the Bell and Hillary Swank To Host a Fashion Trivia Show on the CW?

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 09:41 AM PST

Julianne, Calendar Girl: Actress Julianne Moore is among the mostly nude models in the Karl Lagerfeld-shot Pirelli calendar. She, however, is clothed, posing as Hera, the Greek goddess of marriage. At a recent press conference, Karl called himself “the visual version of Homer.” {WWD subscription required}

Hillary Swank to Host Fashion Game Show? File this under things that make no sense. Oscar winner Hillary Swank is apparently developing a game show for the CW where fashion diehards are tested on their knowledge of fashion trivia and such. We guess Hillary dresses ok most of the time, but never would have guessed she’d end up hosting a fashion television series. Would you watch? {The Cut}

Alexa’s Holiday Surprise: If you didn’t get a chance to snag Alexa Chung’s blink-and-you-missed-it line for Madewell, you have one more chance before the holidays. Madewell is releasing one more piece tomorrow–a long tunic version of the bat tee. Alexa has even offered suggestions for styling: "Wear with tights and a grandad cardigan this winter or wear it to bed so you can look ace even as you sleep.” {People Style Watch}

New American Apparel Ads: Finally, Dov Charney Can Show Pubes

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 08:41 AM PST

Just when you thought Dov Charney was toning things down while his empire teetered on the edge of bankruptcy (his last ads showed him at hard at work on his laptop, fully clothed, with his two creative directors–albeit in bed), new print ads that appeared in the Village Voice and Vice show American Apparel models fully nude, bush included.

Of course, American Apparel’s latest ads don’t feature college freshmen as models. They’re illustrated. These ads mark a dramatic shift in the brand’s advertising, which has relied, since its inception, on ’70s-style Polaroid porn shots of lamé-clad real women in suggestive poses. The ads are still unmistakably American Apparel–’70s vibe, naked girls, suggestively posed, etc.,–but to go from using real models, a hallmark of the American Apparel brand, to illustrated ads might be a sign that the brand is investing in serious cost cutting measures, as Copyranter points out.
