How the Vanity Fair International Best Dressed List Gets Made; A Firsthand Look at the Polling Process

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 03:28 PM PST

Since 2002 Vanity Fair has put out an annual “International Best Dressed List” which honors 10 men and 10 women for their superior sartorial choices. The list also inducts hall of famers, cites first ladies, couples, professional and siblings who have dressed to impress that year.

The list is created by “an international committee of fashion authorities,” and “has as its purpose the maintenance of a continuous historical record of fashion as embodied, defined, and interpreted by influential and prominent personalities each year.” While Vanity Fair has put out this list since 2002, it’s been around since 1940, when it was created by fashion pioneer Eleanor Lambert, who also created the CFDA. We know these things about this list because a little birdie who is close with a member of the “international committee of fashion authorities” slipped us the polling documents. And we scanned them in for your viewing pleasure, of course.

What you’ll see are the instructions and suggestions for consideration for Vanity Fair‘s 2010 international best dressed list.

Here are our observations:
- Of the final 20 best dressed men and women who made the cut (see the final list here), six were write-ins, not “suggested for consideration.” They are: Samantha Cameron (First Lady, U.K.), Nora Ephron (writer, director), Carey Mulligan (actress), Alec Baldwin (actor), Javier Barden (actor), Jay Penske (chairman and C.E.O., Mail.com Media Corp.
-People we think are really well dressed who didn’t make the cut? Alexa Chung, Lou Doillon, and Tilda Swinton jump out. And then of course there are the folks who are nominated who don’t seem to fit the bill. But we won’t go there.

What are your observations?

Gift Guide: The Best Gifts for the Style and Tech-Savvy

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 01:37 PM PST

As Oprah and her audience can attest, iPads make great gifts. So do laptops, e-readers, smart phones and other fun technology. But perhaps even more fun (not to mention less expensive) are the accessories out there to go along with these gadgets. Honestly, I’m not sure which I’d be more excited to unwrap–an actual iPad or a snake-embossed Rebecca Minkoff case for it. (Ok, probs an iPad.)

As more and more designers are smartly expanding into this market, there are now a plethora of fashionable ways to pretty-up your new toys, the sleekest of which still tend to look drab and impersonal. There are Mulberry patent leather laptop cases, Marc by Marc headphones, Tory Burch Kindle sleeves and so much more. Click through for the best tech gifts.

Would You Wear Pants With A Heart-Shaped Hole In the Ass?

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 01:14 PM PST

Australian designer Elliot Ward-Fear gave Frockwriter an exclusive look at his AW10 lookbook, which is monochrome heavy with a side of kooky kitsch. While most of the looks are innovative and exciting, one pair of pants caught me way off guard.

From the front they’re fuzzy pink trousers with white trim, but from the back, well…they’re a whole other beast.

@NoBtotheS is Spreading Holiday Cheer Amongst Fashion Journos and PRs

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:13 PM PST

Our mystery columnist and uber Twitterer, @nobtothes, has made another attempt at confusing the fashion crowd.

Several fashion journalists and PRs–all active on Twitter–have received holiday cards from the elusive character. The return address on each correspondence is different, but all direct us to luxury storefronts. One return address says Burberry, another Cartier, another Hermes…mysterious!

Seems like s/he isn’t giving up on anonymity any time soon!

Call for Submissions: powerHouse Books is Seeking Amateur Fashion Photographers for a New Title

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 11:34 AM PST

Think your fashion photography is any good? Well, powerHouse Books is seeking submissions for an upcoming book featuring under-the-radar photogs. The book’s purpose is to expose lesser-known photographers and models–a risk few publishers are willing to take.

powerHouse Books is asking for photographers to submit the strongest shots of their favorite muses, whether it be a model or a girlfriend. Black and white, color, or film–it doesn’t matter –as long as the photograph and the fashion and beauty elements are of equal importance.

Acquisitions editor, Wes Del Val, along with other notable guest editors, will be selecting the photos showcased in the book.

Report From the WWD Beauty Biz Awards: Changes to WWD And The Winners Revealed

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 10:00 AM PST

This morning, at the ungodly hour of 7:30, the 8th Annual "WWD Beauty Biz Awards” took place at the Four Seasons Restaurant in NYC. Being consummate beauty professionals, everyone in attendance looked refreshed and chic, with lots of Chanel bags and perfectly applied lipstick.

Gina Sanders, the president and CEO of Fairchild Fashion Group, started off the presentation by dishing about changes coming to WWD and Style.com (now owned by Fairchild, of course).

WWD is getting an overall architecture redesign in 2011, and an eight page section called "WWD Style" will be introduced; it will provide deeper "business insight, analysis, and fun." The men's coverage will be increased, with new beefier quarterly sections and more weekly coverage. The Beauty Biz insert will also be overhauled. And finally, an iPad application is coming.

Gina was more vague about Style.com– "Like ladies having work done, we don't want to reveal too much,” she said–but big changes are clearly afoot. She mentioned the potential to reach millions of fanatic fashion and beauty consumers through the site. We will be watching closely.

Now onto the awards.

Breaking: Baptiste Giabiconi’s New Music Video Is Amazing (But Will Karl Approve?)

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 09:09 AM PST

Baptiste Giabiconi, better known as Karl Lagerfeld‘s muse, has been working on a music career for some time. Giabiconi’s single “Showtime” dropped in October and today Christmas came early (or we got a late Hannukah pressie) with the release of his first music video. Giabiconi is that rare pop star whose accent doesn’t disappear when he sings, but the best part is around one minute in where the song stops for some dramatic dialogue and Giabiconi yells, “Whass wrong wees you, man!?”

Our friends at Refinery29 astutely observed that the song sounds super Ke$ha-y, which also means it’s catchy and not horrible and could easily be the ganthem for the new year (that’s gay anthem, and yes, I just made it up right now). Loves it. Yay.

Calling All Fashionable Tots With iPads: Your Gucci App Is Here!

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 08:34 AM PST

Are you a six-year-old with a flair for fashion and do you also own an iPad? (Read: Are you Suri Cruise?) Well then Gucci Playground is the app for you.

Brought to you buy the folks who created the $225 3-D movie glasses, Gucci Playground, which launched today, is the brand’s first app, WWD is reporting. Aimed at their youngest customers, it features Gucci’s newly launched children’s line and lets users dress up multi-culti “paper dolls” in the collection and put finishing touches, like wallpaper and color, on their looks with the brush of a chubby toddler index finger.

It’s like really expensive finger painting without the mess! Maybe that’s why socialite moms Emily Mortimer, Vogue's Filipa Fino, Celerie Kemble and Stephanie Wolkoff (with their kids in tow) are set to fete the new app at Gucci’s flagship store on Fifth Ave. later this afternoon.

And if you haven’t checked out Gucci’s kid’s line yet, it’s worth a look, if only to gawk at their child models who are styled like adults. Take a look.

Natalie Portman is the New Face of Miss Dior Cherie

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 08:00 AM PST

We guessed right!

Back in June when it was announced that Black Swan star Natalie Portman would front a Dior perfume, we figured it would be Miss Dior Cherie, beloved by ingenues the world over.

And yes, Portman is starring in the Sofia Coppola commercial and Tim Walker-shot ads, which hit televisions/magazines this March.

We can’t wait, although we’ll never grow tired of Marina Lynchuk:

Quote of the Day: Tom Ford Kisses and Tells

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 07:07 AM PST

“Terry and I decided to do a kissing shot, so we kissed and kissed and kissed. And Terry is such a soft, sweet kisser. That’s what I think is sexy now.”

–Tom Ford opens up about his make out sesh with Terry Richardson in January’s Harper’s Bazaar. If this is what Ford thinks is “sexy now,” we’re a little concerned.

Also Ford readjusted Rita Wilson’s corset during his New York show by feeling her up. “He slid his hand ever so gently into my cleavage and adjusted me. Whaaaaaat? A man who is not my husband touching my breast? And I haven’t called the cops?” Wilson told the glossy. Which just goes to show, Tom Ford can get away with anything. Via the NY Post.
