Label to Watch: Ruby Kobo (Don’t Worry, No Elk Were Harmed in the Making Of This Collection) Posted: 30 Nov 2010 04:15 PM PST We’ve had our eye on jewelry label Ruby Kobo ever since they were selected to work in the CFDA’s Fashion Incubator last February. Since then, Yuvi Alpert and Danna Kobo, the 26-year-old duo behind the two-year-old line, have been hard at work in their CFDA-funded Garment Center studio expanding their collection of bohemian-inspired fine jewelry. They just launched their own website, and their new holiday collection is one of their strongest to date. 8 Outfit Changes for Oscar Host Anne Hathaway Posted: 30 Nov 2010 03:42 PM PST Anne Hathaway and James Franco are hosting the Oscars this year. We’re very much looking forward to this, both for James Franco’s craziness and Anne Hathaway’s ensembles, because you know there will be many and you know they will all be ah-mazing. We’ve decided to lighten Rachel Zoe‘s load a little this year (she is pregnant and all) and style Annie ourselves. So, ignoring the fact that many of her looks will probably be Fall 2011 (the Oscars are a couple weeks after Fashion Week), here are eight plausible outfits for Anne Hathaway’s big night. And don’t worry, there are more couture dresses than sweatshirts inside. Join Us December 3 at 3pm for the Inaugural Fashionista Book Club! Posted: 30 Nov 2010 03:22 PM PST I picked up Detmar Blow’s biography of his late wife, Isabella Blow, while at the shows in Paris. I read it one evening in less than two hours. I have a million things to say about Blow by Blow, but since it’s time for the Fashionista Book Club, I’ll keep quiet for a little while longer! On Friday, December 3 at 3pm we’ll be hosting a live chat about the book right here on Fashionista. You’ll be able to hear what each of us thinks about the book, and you’ll also be able to voice your own opinion. In the meantime, order your book here. If you have a Kindle or the Kindle app on your iPad or iPhone, you can also order a digital copy. Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. |
Why Models Do Commercial Work: Vogue Pays $225, J.Crew Pays $15,000 Posted: 30 Nov 2010 02:52 PM PST Curious as to why your favorite model is shilling for Victoria’s Secret this evening? Or why bad-ass Erin Wasson shows up in J.Crew catalogs? It’s simple: Commercial work pays a hell of a lot better than editorial. Even if Crystal is prouder of her Tom Ford/Carine spread in Vogue Paris, she’s happier with her Marina Rinaldi paycheck. That fact is put to paper on a tell-tale invoice, obtained by Jezebel. Would You Wear… Female Silhouette Printed Clothing Posted: 30 Nov 2010 01:52 PM PST Images of Thom Browne’s SS11 womenswear collection appeared on the internet yesterday, showcasing not only Browne’s covetable designs, but also the staying power of a strange trend. Showing suits printed with female silhouettes, Browne’s Spring 2011 collection is the most recent in a string of designers to create items showcasing the female form. From Moschino’s vintage blouse seen on Susie Bubble, to YSL’s pendants, Lanvin’s tees, and famously Miu Miu’s SS10 prints, the woman-print has a long heritage, and doesn’t seem to be going away. The question is: Would you wear this trend or are you leaving the naked silhouettes for the bedroom? Blinged Out Bras: A Look Back At 14 Years of the Victoria’s Secret Multi-Million Dollar Fantasy Bras Posted: 30 Nov 2010 11:47 AM PST The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, in all of it’s boob-ed and winged splendor, airs tonight at 10 p.m. on CBS. This year, Adriana Lima wears the coveted fantasy bra, which rings in at a whopping $2 million and took craftsmen over 1500 hours to make. Of course, $2 million is nothing compared to the $15 million ruby and diamond encrusted bra and panty set that Gisele Bündchen wore during the Victoria’s Secret show in 2000. That lingerie set holds the Guiness Book record for the most expensive underwear in the world. In fact, this year marks the cheapest fantasy bra Victoria’s Secret has shown since they started the fantasy bra in 1996. Claudia Schiffer got the honor that year of wearing the very first million dollar fantasy bra. Since we’ve already singled out the 10 most ridiculous looks from tonight’s show, without further ado, a look back at 14 years of the Victoria’s Secret fantasy bras. Style.com’s Reality Show: Online Only? Posted: 30 Nov 2010 10:39 AM PST Excited for North of Madison? We’ve heard rumblings from multiple sources that Style.com’s reality show might end up airing on the web, rather than television. Why would Style.com air the series online? Two possible reasons: 1. They haven’t yet found a channel that wants to buy it. 2. They’re positioning the series as a web feature in order to attract more readers to the site on a regular basis. Posted: 30 Nov 2010 09:28 AM PST It’s a girl! Stella McCartney birthed what will be a very well-dressed baby last Tuesday in London. The designer and her husband just revealed that it’s a girl named Reiley, who will totally be fighting over these clothes with Rachel Zoe’s baby (who we continue to assume is a girl). {The Cut} PETA vs. DKNY: DKNY does not like Facebook spamming. PETA appears to have attacked DKNY (again) via Facebook yesterday. A bunch of people posted comments with profile pictures that spelled out “DK BUNNY BUTCHER.” DKNY has since deleted the comments and appear to have disabled commenting altogether. {BuzzFeed/Facebook} APC Gets Robbed: I’ve dreamed of robbing an A.P.C. store, but figured I’d never get away with it. Some guy in L.A. was a bit more confident. Here is a kind of funny video of him trying to break into A.P.C., set to what Racked calls “A.P.C. music.” {Racked} The Kardashian Kard is Kaput: There’s our K aliteration for the day. “The negative spotlight turned on the Kardashians as a result of the Attorney General’s comments and actions threatens everything for which they have worked,” is what the Kardashian’s lawyer said about finding out that the Kardashian-branded prepaid debit card could violate consumer protection laws. Apparently, they didn’t know this before they began working so hard on the card and have thus decided to cut ties with it. {Page Six} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Jonathan Saunders Designs for Escada Posted: 30 Nov 2010 08:41 AM PST Last November, when Megha Mittal–daughter-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal–acquired bankrupt German fashion brand Escada for a reported 30 million euros, onlookers were curious as to what exactly she’d do with the struggling label. Back then, I speculated that Mrs. Mittal was an Escada customer, and that this would be the Wharton Business School graduate’s baby. Looks like that has proven true, as Mittal has taken multiple steps to bring the firm out of the red, including new retail stores for Escada and Escada sport, as well as lower entry price points and more daywear. (Because not everyone can be bothered with sequined dresses.) In her latest effort, Mittal has brought on London-based designer Jonathan Saunders to create a capsule for Escada Sport. Saunders, who’s best known for his colorful prints, fits well with the brand–or, more precisely, where the brand seems to want to go. The collection will be released for resort 2012.
