January Jones Gets Naked for Versace

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 07:10 AM PST

Versace’s spring/summer 2011 campaign starring January Jones is out, though the Mad Men star is wearing very little Versace in it.

Jones is naked save for a strategically placed bag and shoes in the first image of the campaign to be released. According to WWD, she doesn’t put on much more for the rest of the campaign, modeling only Versace accessories including shoes, bags, sunglasses and glasses.

Jones has been a fan of the brand for sometime, wearing Versace for big red carpet events, and this year she attended the label’s spring show (even if she did hold it up by almost an hour). Donatella Versace has reportedly described Jones as “deeply sensual” and told WWD that she is “always on the lookout for the next Versace blonde…and in January I feel I have found a perfect Versace woman for the 21st century.”

Elle Fanning’s 10 Best Looks…So Far

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:31 PM PST

The mini fashionista craze isn’t going anywhere fast. First it was Willow Smith making the rounds at Milan Fashion Week, then Chloë Moretz was featured in T, and now it’s Elle Fanning’s day in the sun. The 12-year-old star of Sofia Coppola’s new film Somewhere was all over our December mood board. She’s wearing Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel for a spread in Interview and Valentino and Rodarte (including the Kirkwood for Rodarte wedges) on the red carpet to promote the film.

“I love fashion! I love clothes!” she told Interview. “I really like vintage clothes, so in my closet there’s a lot of ’50s stuff.” Fanning’s red carpet appearances show that she gravitates towards a girly ’50s silhouette, which makes sense since she is, after all, a girl. She also told the mag she prefers vintage to designer, but Valentino seems to be a clear favorite.

Of course, being around Sofia Coppola can’t hurt for some proper style inspiration either. Check out Fanning’s 10 best looks so far.

Shocking News: New Study Shows That Beauty Ads Can Make You Feel Bad About Yourself

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 01:15 PM PST

Whether you think the beauty industry is full of artifice and false hope, or believe it provides legitimate services and products, there is definitely a psychological component. While trying to maintain a firm sense of objectivity and logic, I still sort of fall into the latter camp. I think mascara is a miracle product that makes you look instantly awake and younger. And retinoids work. But there's a lot of gray area, and this is where beauty ads come in. Their sole purpose is to convince you that you NEED something, that your looks could be improved.

This Sunday the New York Times style section reviewed a new study from The Journal of Consumer Research wherein the authors observed the reactions of young women after they looked at a series of images and advertisements. There were a few surprises.

The women looked at advertising and plain images of products, without any human models–just pictures of bottles and tubes with ad copy. The products were divided into two categories: beauty enhancing (like perfume) and problem solving (such as acne cream).

Breaking Fashion TV News: Project Runway: Accessories Spin-off Sold To Lifetime, Leighton Meester To Leave Gossip Girl

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:49 PM PST

Leighton Meester is taking off her Gossip Girl headband for good. In two years, that is. E!‘s Mark Malkin is reporting that Meester will leave the fashionable soap when her contract is up.

The show has been generous in letting its stars rearrange their schedules to accommodate filming for movies, like Meester’s upcoming Country Strong opposite Gwyneth Paltrow.

When asked if the show would end in two years, Meester said, “I don’t know…but I think there’s that old saying about wanting to go out on top.” Meester’s Blair is pretty much the best thing about the show so we can’t imagine it would fare well without her. So soak up these last two years GG fans! XOXO.

And in fashion reality TV news, Harvey Weinstein has sold a Project Runway spin-off, Project Runway: Accessories, to Lifetime, Nikki Finke is reporting.

Would You Rather? The Natalie Portman Vogue Cover Edition

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 11:50 AM PST

On the right, we have Natalie Portman‘s January 2011 Vogue cover. On the left, her Vogue cover from May 2002. Nine years apart, but pretty similar, no? in both covers Portman wears pale pink dresses, her hair is styled in a low pony tail, and the headlines are in black and red.

Also worth noting, as some folks on Fashin have pointed out, it seems peculiar that Portman is wearing a J. Mendel dress that looks like Rodarte, instead of an actual Rodarte dress. Isn’t she on the cover for her role in Black Swan, whose costumes were designed by Rodarte? Or maybe it’s just that J. Mendel bought heaps of advertising this month.

@NoBtotheS Holiday Wish List

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 10:09 AM PST

Welcome back to @NoBtotheS's series on the suicide inducing habits of people in the fashion industry. (Editor's note: If you're not familiar with NoBtotheS, or No Bullshit, s/he is an anonymous fashion publicist working in New York City who's famed for a hilarious Twitter account.)

I made my list, I checked it twice, I already know I’m naughty not nice…welcome to my holiday wish list.

I want…

1. To be shot by the legendary Bill Cunningham and featured in NY Times Style section. Mr. Cunningham, I’ve restrained myself in the past from diving in front of your lens. You’re so small and elderly I would hate to accidentally break your hip. This would only be doing both of us a favor!

2. For Joanna Hillman to attend a press preview.
Period.

3. To share a leisurely lunch with two of my favorite foreign editors: Franca Sozzani and Carine Roitfeld. Oh, the stories they would tell! We would dish and drink and part as sisters.

Lauren Lauren Is Finally Happening (We Hope)

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 09:06 AM PST

David Lauren and Lauren Bush are engaged, the NY Post is reporting. The fashionable couple started dating six years ago after they met at the Vogue Costume Institute gala, so it was fitting that Lauren proposed Friday night at the Met.

It is truly a union of fashion and pedigree. Lauren is the 39-year-old son of Ralph Lauren and Bush is a model, designer (she has a line called Lauren Pierce), and is most known today for her FEED bag charity whose bags and other products combat hunger.

We’ve been awaiting this union because if Lauren Pierce Bush (W’s niece) takes her future husband’s name she’ll be Lauren Lauren. And that will be hilarious.
