Posted: 25 Mar 2011 05:29 PM PDT In the last month, five former American Apparel employees have come forward claiming sexual harassment against the company’s founder Dov Charney. 20-year-old Irene Morales filed suit in early March, seeking $260 million in damages. On Wednesday, the New York Times reported that a second sexual harassment suit was being brought against Charney on behalf of four former American Apparel employees: Kimbra Lo, Alyssa Ferguson, Marissa Wilson and Tesa Lubans-Dehaven. The same lawyer, Eric Baum, is representing all five girls in both suits. Today we spoke to a source who knows Lo, as well as several of the other women. According the source, Lo worked for the company for seven months and left in May 2010. The source calls these group of women “estranged groupies” who are using this as a “way to get rich quick. They all know Dov, whether platonically, or not. Or in the case of Irene, she was practically stalking him.” When asked why these women might want to do such a thing, the source said. “It’s a way to get rich quick. Kimbra has a history of getting involved with high profile men, and this is her cash-out.” Another source remarked, “All made threats of some sort not only to Charney but to other American Apparel employees like the photographers, etc. that if they didn’t get more money and attention, they would go public with a fake lawsuit. As of now, they have no evidence. This is a civil matter, not a criminal case, which is what people don’t understand. They won’t get a dime.” It seems other folks are out to leak their own “smoking gun” photos and bits of gossip. We’ve been bombarded by anonymous tipsters leaking information about Kimbra Lo and now extremely NSFW emails alleged to be from Irene Morales to to Dov Charney have leaked on two blogs–kimbralo.blogspot.com and alyssaferguson.blogspot.com. More photos of Lo with Olivier Zahm are feature on these blogs, as well as Lo’s alleged spread for hipster porn mag Jacques. Gawker received similar tips, including additional emails alleged to be from Morales to Charney, one of which is a list of American Apparel birthday items she wants, dangling this as bait: “do it for all those delicious blowjobs I would give you, and how I would lick your little asshole clean!!! And how I would love to do it again when I see you!” Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Best Dressed: Kate in Stella, Emily in Erdem, Poppy in Thakoon and More Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:38 PM PDT This week nearly everyone was into European designers. Even Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen dropped their gear from The Row for one evening to wear YSL, which sponsored the opening night of “Le Comte Ory” at the Met. Kate Winslet was stunning as usual in Stella McCartney, and Emily Browning looked ravishing in Erdem. Poppy Delevigne was the one holdout, wearing a divine Thakoon jacket at a party for the designer in London. See, we just can’t escape New York. The 10 Best Looks from Michelle Obama’s South American Tour Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:11 PM PDT The First Lady just wrapped her five day tour of South America. As always, when the Obamas goes on tour, Mrs. O ups her outfit ante. Visiting El Salvador, Chile and Brazil Michelle Obama’s looks seemed even more vibrant and boldly colored–a reflection of the culture of South America. “Mrs. Obama’s wardrobe is consistently referential to the host country or region she’s visiting during trips abroad,” says Mary Tomer, editor and founder of Mrs.O, the blog that details who and what the First Lady wears in meticulous detail. “During the Obama’s trip to India and Indonesia in November 2010, for example, the first lady chose richly embroidered, embellished pieces, and prints with ikat influence.” And though the McQueen gown Michelle Obama wore to the China state dinner caused controversy because she wore a British designer rather than an American one, may interpreted the bright red color as an homage to it’s importance in Chinese culture. “Now in South America, Mrs. Obama has embraced bright colors and bold prints, which appears to be a nod to South American culture,” says Tomer. “Though, to note, this is not such a departure from Mrs. Obama’s day to day style, which tends not to shy away from bold color and print.” Tomer also pointed out that the First Lady’s stable of favorite designers does not seem to have shifted post-Ikram: “For this trip, Mrs. O has worn ensembles by Tracy Reese, Rachel Roy, Sophie Theallet, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu and Zero + Maria Cornejo…With the exception of Marc by Marc Jacobs, these same designers could be seen in Mrs. Obama’s wardrobe during 2008 and 2009.” Take a look at Mrs. O’s stunning South American tour wardrobe. Watch: The Last Magazine Takes Joseph Altuzarra, YSL and Proenza Schouler From New York to the Alps Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PDT
Filmmaker Simon Cave didn’t want to make the typical fashion film when beginning work on “Distances,” a short piece created for The Last Magazine. So he relied somewhat on the wisdom of his friend, designer Joseph Altuzarra. “Joseph and I love movie trailers, so I wanted to make a fashion film in the same vein–something that suggests more of a narrative,” he says of the project, “I planned a trip to the Alps and Joseph supplied some incredible dresses…. His work lends itself to the moving image so well.” The result is more about beauty and less about fashion, but one can’t help notice the model’s gorgeous wares. Along with Altuzarra pieces, the lucky lady featured in the clip–filmed in both New York and the Alps–wears YSL shoes and a Proenza Schouler dress. Dov Charney Accuser Kimbra Lo is Apparently Olivier Zahm’s Ex-Girlfriend Posted: 25 Mar 2011 01:05 PM PDT While Dov Charney’s latest accuser, Kimbra Lo, was making her case on this morning’s Today Show, our Inboxes were bombarded with rumors of her alleged past. Along with rumors that she at one point dated Olivier Zahm–she appears on his Purple Diary here, here, and here–she has also posed for upscale erotic magazine Jacques. Fashionista has obtained the images, but we’re not running them until we are granted permission from the magazine. Proenza Schouler Wishes Target Would Stop Ripping Off Their PS1 Posted: 25 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PDT Proenza Schouler’s PS1 became an instant “it bag.” As such, it’s been knocked off countless times. We’ve devoted several “Adventures in Copyright” to PS1 knockoffs, including ones by Gap, Zara and some label called Navoh. Cathy Horyn noticed that the fashion blogosphere was buzzing about Target label Mossimo’s take on the PS1 (which is pretty good). The knockoff was brought to the attention of designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, when McCoullugh’s sister emailed her brother a photo of the bag from her local Target. Posted: 25 Mar 2011 10:32 AM PDT Dov Charney’s Accuser Speaks Out: Kimbra Lo, the second former American Apparel employee to file suit against founder Dov Charney for sexual harassment, went on the Today show this morning. Lo told Ann Curry Charney attacked her after she showed up at his house to discuss photography and modeling opportunities. “I didn’t feel like there was a way for me to leave safely..I was terrified,” she said. American Apparel has issued a statement saying they have love letters from Lo to Charney after she left American Apparel and that they have “‘smoking gun’ photographs undermining her false accusations of unwelcome harassment.” {The Cut} The September Issue Director’s New Fashion Project: R.J. Cutler is one of the executive producers behind a new show for HBO called Spring/Fall starring Tea Leoni. It’s a half hour comedy, “set in New York City against the backdrop of the fashion world and stars Leoni as half of a dysfunctional partnership between two women with different approaches to career, family and friendship.” {Deadline} A Carine-Inspired Editorial: Fashion Indie unearthed this editorial from Polish mag Fashion which takes aim at Carine Roitfeld et al. Oh, Goody! Ingenious Hair Pins Help You Do Easy Updos Posted: 25 Mar 2011 10:00 AM PDT A friend of mine was raving about Spin Pins the other day, and about how they're impossible to find in NYC, so I had to investigate. A Spin Pin, made by hair gadget guru Goody, is a double-helix spiral shaped pin that helps keep updos in place. They come in regular and mini sizes and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they're the best things to hit hairstyling since the humble bobby pin. I don't really have enough hair for a proper updo, but I put a Spin Pin into a hunk of my hair and it didn't move. Using a Spin Pin is intuitively easy–you just screw it into a twisted updo (no elastic or hair bungee required) and it holds everything together. I'm sure there's some sort of physics theory to explain how it works, but let's just leave it at this: it works.
