Rihanna’s Stylist on Her Rolling Stone Cover: “If Rihanna and Kid Rock Had a Baby…” Posted: 31 Mar 2011 07:00 AM PDT It’s hard not to notice Rihanna’s Rolling Stone cover. The pop star’s flawless booty takes center stage, barely covered by a teeny-tiny pair of denim hot pants. Only they’re not denim. The magic booty “shorts” are actually “metal mesh shorts” (Rihanna tweeted that they were “chain mail”), custom made by Michael Schmidt Studios for the shoot’s stylist, B. Akerlund. You might have heard of B. Akerlund–she’s also styled Lady Gaga (she styled Gaga’s Rolling Stone cover as well as the video for Paparazzi) as well as Madonna, and countless other pop icons. So we had to know, just what was she thinking with those shorts? “The inspiration was if Rihanna and Kid Rock had a baby,” she told us. Fair enough. Let’s just hope that doesn’t actually happen IRL. Former Marc Jacobs Exec Sues Robert Duffy For Allegedly Being a Silly Pervert Posted: 30 Mar 2011 07:17 PM PDT The former CFO and COO of Marc Jacobs International, Patrice Lataillade, is suing the company, along with president Robert Duffy and parent firm LVMH, according to the NY Post. Marc Jacobs, the designer, was not named in the suit. Lataillade, who was fired in September, is accusing Duffy of using company money to pay for personal expenses, making employees look at gay pornography, and the production of an MJI book comprised of photographs of employees in sexual positions. Textbook for Fashionista: Babe Paley Posted: 30 Mar 2011 02:30 PM PDT
In New York in 1966, the most envied women of the city were undoubtedly Truman Capote’s “swans”–an elite group of high society ladies that the author liked to keep around (and who attended his famed Black and White ball that same year). Perhaps the most famous of them all was Babe Paley, a Vogue staffer and nightlife fixture. Ms. Paley spent her days in her fashionable St. Regis apartment, her evenings at the more glamorous parties and her weekends in one of her country homes. She is still revered as one of the most fashionable New Yorkers to this day and there are still little reminders out there. Ever see a scarf tied to a handbag? Babe invented that. Takin’ care of business, every day Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball Working the day away at Vogue Enjoyed this? Tweet us a suggestion for next week or leave one in the comments below. Toronto Fashion Week: Joe Fresh Takes Toronto (Before New York) Posted: 30 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PDT TORONTO-Listen up New York! There’s a new man coming to town and he goes by the name Joe Fresh. The Canadian big box store is set to take on Manhattan this August but before crossing the boarder, Joseph Mimran gave his hometown a first look at last night's show. Inspired by the international runways, Joe Fresh presented an array of boldly colored looks filled with the spirit of the ’60s and that ’70s polish. Referencing top designers like Jil Sander, Celine and Burberry, the Canadian label added a democratic take to the season's most covetable styles. The fast fashion retailer, who's setting up shop at the corner of 5th and 43rd, plans to test the waters before embarking on what may be 800 locations across the US. But Joe isn't coming alone. His wife Kimberly Newport-Mimran, designer of the prim and proper label Pink Tartan, has her eye on big city too. Brad Goreski To Get His Own Show on Bravo, It’s a Brad Brad World Posted: 30 Mar 2011 01:04 PM PDT It was only a matter of time. Rachel Zoe‘s former assistant Brad Goreski, whose bow ties often stole a little of Zoe’s spotlight on her own Bravo series, has landed his own show on Bravo called It’s a Brad Brad World. According to the release we just received from Bravo, the show will follow Goreski “as he embarks on his new solo career as a stylist…and tries to maintain his personal life.” Cameras will trail Goreski as he hits up Paris fashion week, Cannes, the men's runway shows and couture. Goreski has certainly stepped up his styling game since parting ways with new mommy Zoe. J.Crew Men’s Fall 2011: Masculine, But Also Sophisticated Posted: 30 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT Taking in Frank Muytjens's fall 2011 collection for J.Crew, I came across an old friend, a fashion designer. She asked me what I thought and my answer went like this: "I like it. I mean, it's smart…and boring, but it's J.Crew, so it should be boring." Her response was much more thoughtful, and more telling. She reminded me that Middle America and your average guy need some help dressing, and J. Crew is providing them the right kind of help. And she's right. To this end, Muytjens has focused on separates in a workwear-dominated collection inspired by the Lewis Hine photographs of the Empire State Building's construction. "Fabrics out of context," the designer noted, "Chino, with a bit of denim," he added, pointing to a handsome blue trouser that effectively blended the two textures. Would You Rather…? The Zooey Deschanel Airbrushing Edition Posted: 30 Mar 2011 11:30 AM PDT Zooey Deschanel may be the most lovable starlet working today. From her peachy singing voice to her penchant for retro garb, she’s always a charmer. But when it seemed that she was finally getting her due recognition with a Rimmel London campaign and the cover of Flare Magazine, she’s been airbrushed into oblivion. So what gives, airbrushers? What beef have you got with Zooey? Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 30 Mar 2011 11:17 AM PDT International street wear brand, WeSC (WeAreTheSuperlativeConspiracy) is looking for the next generation of "Intellectual Slackers" to intern with us. J.Crew Women’s Fall 2011: Glamorous Prep Posted: 30 Mar 2011 10:52 AM PDT For fall, Jenna Lyons, Marissa Webb, and the rest of the J.Crew women’s collection team chose a decidedly preppy look. “Of course they did!” you might say. But it was prep in the way we like to think of it: buttoned up with a bit of quirk and glamor for good measure. There were geeky platform loafers in lavender satin, sky blue cropped trousers, and a fit and flare trench that is sure to become a wardrobe staple for many. Gone were the relaxed military inspirations of recent collections. This was more about refinement. And adventurous color; along with the lavenders and sky blues, we saw melon, lipstick red, and crayon yellow. But really, out of everything, we can’t stop thinking about that fit and flare trench.
