Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:22 AM PDT New York will be seeing a lot more of Carine Roitfeld in the coming months. She’ll be front row at New York fashion week for the spring shows, and buzzing about an iconic New York department store. The former Paris Vogue editor has teamed up with Barneys New York to serve as guest editor and stylist for the luxury retailer’s fall ad campaign, catalogue and mailers. She’ll also have a hand in styling Barney’s windows, to be revealed in September. "It's a new kind of project for me,” Roitfeld told WWD. “It's good to have a new life, because now I can do projects that I never dreamed of before." She continued, "For me…to be able to participate in this project with [Barney's], and be visible during the next fashion week in New York, is my dream come true…to a French girl, it's a big, big dream." Roitfeld’s project with Barney’s has many components. Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Would You Rather…? The Mary-Kate and Ashley Edition Posted: 23 Mar 2011 04:00 PM PDT The lengthy portrait of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in April’s Vogue shows them as savvy business women with a lifetime of experience, which they most certainly are. But in our hearts they’ll always be those twins from Full House. Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Fashion You Can Feel Good About: These Pieces Benefit Disaster Victims in Japan Posted: 23 Mar 2011 03:00 PM PDT The tsunami and earthquakes in Japan continue to affect the country’s people. Most recently, residents were advised not to let their children drink from the tap due to radiation in the water. It’s difficult to help when you’re this far away, but it’s not impossible. Along with donating directly to organizations like the Red Cross and UNICEF, there are other ways you can help. Plenty of designers and brands have issued special edition items for which the proceeds will benefit Japan. Click through to see some of the best. Dolce & Gabbana Will Find Out Soon Whether or Not They Face a Criminal Trial for Tax Evasion Posted: 23 Mar 2011 02:59 PM PDT Last November, designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce were indicted for tax evasion. They each allegedly failed to pay taxes on about $569 million worth of income over the last few years. According to the International Herald Tribune, the design duo behind Dolce & Gabbana will be told by Friday whether or not their actions warrant a criminal trial. Introducing Surplus, The Fragrance Made From Human Poo and Its Disgusting Ad Posted: 23 Mar 2011 02:15 PM PDT Thank you Vice, for introducing us to Jammie Nicholas, the British artist who expresses himself by creating perfume made from his own poo. He sells his stink for £40 (that’s $65) a bottle, and to date he’s sold 25 of the 85 bottles he’s created. He calls it “Surplus,” tagline “Made from the Excesses of the Body.” So how did Nicholas come up with the idea? “I was reading a book by the French writer Dominique Laporte called The History Of Shit, which analyses the theoretical and social implications of faeces, and its role as a building material for cosmetics,” he told Vice. “It suggested that pleasant smells were used to cover bad smells, so it could be suggested that a bad smell could be used to cover pleasant smells.” Sorry to have ruined your day! Elizabeth Taylor’s Most Outrageous Fashion Statements Posted: 23 Mar 2011 01:55 PM PDT The CFDA just announced that Lady Gaga would receive this year’s “Style Icon” award. Sure, her style is provocative, daring, and she certainly deserves the award. But was she the first to push fashion over the top in that headline grabbing way? Of course not. Before her there was Madonna, and before Madonna there was Cher and before Cher there was Elizabeth Taylor. The screen legend is known for many things: her acting chops, her incredible beauty, her seven husbands, her struggle with addiction, oh, and her incredible style. As a young ingenue she adhered to ’50s style–perfect for flaunting her curvy figure. But as she got older her style got bolder. Here, a look though at some of this original style icon’s most outrageously awesome fashion statements. Barbie Turns Model in the Latest Issue of Plastic Dreams Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PDT Melissa shoes is a company that makes plastic only shoes. Not in the “granola munching” way, but rather the “collaborated with Vivienne Westwood and Zaha Hadid” way. But Melissa’s latest collab is a bit more mass market–it’s with Barbie! In the Brazilian label’s magazine, which stars Katy Perry (who else?), Barbie herself is styled in wild fashions while wearing Melissa’s signature plastic shoe. I suppose it must be a nice change from her everyday pink plastic heels. Check out Barbie’s turn as a model after the jump. Image of the Day: Stefan Beckman Crafts Light Fixtures out of Recycled Coke Bottles Posted: 23 Mar 2011 11:00 AM PDT Another engagement forced us to skip out on Monday night’s Dining by Design benefit for DIFFA (Design Industry Foundation Fighting AIDS). And we were disappointed to miss out. Every spring, DIFFA asks several designers to create tablescapes ala Sandra Lee, but cooler. Participants included a group of students from FIT and Slade Architecture. But our favorite had to be Stefan Beckman’s for Coca Cola, which was made almost entirely out of re-purposed materials. Posted: 23 Mar 2011 10:18 AM PDT Anne Slowey is Real Funny: Elle‘s Anne Slowey hilariously recounts some boozy safari she once took with some “Hollywood power players” for a story about how to wear tribal prints. Highlights? “We called ourselves ‘Bush in the Bush,’ to the delight of the male guests, if that helps bring the nature of this trip into focus,” and “Our main concerns were what time each day was gin o'clock and who among us was having very loud, robust sex all night with the incredibly handsome lead guide (it wasn't me).” {Elle} Street Style Gets Better With Age: And Nowness’s new short film with “Advanced Style” blogger Ari Seth Cohen and filmmaker Lina Plioplyte featuring New York’s most fashionable ladies of a certain age proves it. Street style stars take note–this is how it’s done. {NOWNESS} Paz Throws a Punch: Paz de la Heurta drunkenly crashed into a table at the top of the Standard this past weekend, prompting model Samantha Swetra, who was hanging with Lindsay Lohan, to call out “triple axel!” Which quickly became not so funny as de la Heurta responded by punching Swetra in the face and throwing a glass at her leg. {Gatecrasher} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds is Still the Best-Selling Celebrity Fragrance in the World Posted: 23 Mar 2011 08:57 AM PDT From Jennifer Aniston to the Biebs, it’s quite rare these days to find a celebrity who doesn’t have his or her own fragrance. That’s because a signature perfume can bring in millions of dollars each year. And they have Elizabeth Taylor to thank for it. The actress, who died today at the age of 79, launched her scent White Diamonds in 1991. While she certainly wasn’t the first celebrity to come out with a scent, she was the first to do it well. And it’s still the best-selling celebrity fragrance in the world, bringing in $76.9 million globally in 2010. (That’s according to the Chicago-headquartered Euromonitor International, a market research firm that tracks this sort of thing.) Now, that number includes the flanker fragrances under the Elizabeth Taylor name, including Black Pearl and Passion. But White Diamonds alone brought in $61.3 million in 2010, which is still pretty unbelievable.
