Isabel Marant Fall 2011: Nouveau Navajo Posted: 05 Mar 2011 06:45 AM PST PARIS–Maybe Isabel Marant was inspired by the Pendleton-clad, 80s-cropped-leather-jacket-wearing Brooklyn girls who lust over her clothes this season. Because for fall 2011, Marant is all about the American Southwest. She sent out distressed Navajo print sweaters, patchwork denim work shirts with shearling-lined collars, fringed white leather tunic-style mini dresses and short-sleeved cuffed sweatshirt tops done in a brown feather print. And all of it was paired with thigh-high fringed white leather boots. There were uber-mini sparkly dresses, carried over from last season (which is good because I still want one) and loads of luxe white shearling and thick knits to close the show. So will Isabel Marant keep Brooklyn girls in feathers and fringe, in Navajo prints and oversized cropped jackets? Ann Demeulemeester Fall 2011: Mammoth Elegance, Suited for a Modern Ice Age Posted: 04 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PST As the lights dimmed and the music started, flowing dark woolen pieces trailed behind ornately plumed models fitted into robust jackets and pants. They projected the primal strength of a contemporary woman conquering the elements with fierce elegance. Fashion is and always has been about survival, after all. It's clear that Ann Demeulemeester's aesthetic is "edgy." That certainly hasn't changed this season, evident in the collection’s spectacular theatrics. Nina Ricci Fall 2011: Portrait of a Lady Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:25 PM PST There was romance in the air at Nina Ricci–this was clear before the show even began. The long gravel pathway to l’Espace Ephemere was lined with tea lights and a white carpet, setting the tone for the elegant, delicate and above all, romantic collection and that would follow. Peter Copping sent out an achingly beautiful, over-the-top feminine collection of tailored suiting with corsetry details paired with glamorous floppy fur hats and waist-defining dresses on the bias with delicate hints of lace and lingerie. The look was “Parisian nonchalant elegance, glamour and sensuality,” according to the line sheet. In contrast to the form-fitting looks, there were oversized wrap coats described as “bathrobe-like” in dark green velvet, slouchy menswear-inspired trousers, and one incredibly yummy extra-large grandpa cardigan that looked very un-grandpa like over a silk slip dress with lingerie details. The palette moved from frosty pastels–ice blue, sea green and blush–to deep jewel tones like forest green and “Morello Cherry.” To add a bit of princess sparkle, models wore jeweled headbands which mimicked the gem encrusted necklines on several of the looks. It’s a collection Blair Waldorf would kill for–if only she were sweet enough to pull it off (no offense, B, you know we love you). Hilary Rhoda Hits the Beach in FOAM Magazine Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PST
Our favorite all-American model Hilary Rhoda covers the latest issue of chic LA-based surf mag FOAM. The editorial is Rhoda’s first since moving over to Women Management from IMG, and we love that she’s doing some less commercial work. With her rocking beach bod, dark brows and piercing blue eyes, Rhoda makes the fiercest surfer girl we’ve ever seen. Advanced copies of the mag hit newsstands today. Sharon Wauchob Fall 2011: French Embroideries for an International Woman Posted: 04 Mar 2011 11:30 AM PST Sharon Wauchob is Irish, attended London's Central St Martins school, designs for Edun in New York and shows her own eponymous line in Paris. So who is the Wauchob woman? "It's more a matter of using what is available and specific to the country,” Sharon told us backstage after the show, "For instance France has incredible, unique lace and pleating techniques." Indeed, Sharon, who previously worked on textiles at Louis Vuitton is growing to be an expert at fabric treatment. Her collection, shown last night in Paris' Beaux-Arts school, is a game of laces, playing on the subtlety of layering two sheer fabrics, contrasting fur and fishnet-like broderie anglaise. Fragrance Friday: Margiela’s Juice Finally Hits the US and Bond No. 9′s New One Is Hot Pink Posted: 04 Mar 2011 11:00 AM PST The fragrance news this Friday is particularly exciting. Margiela's "Untitled" will hit the US in April, and Bond No 9's "Madison Square Park" launches March 15. The best news? Neither one is in any way associated with a perky starlet. Rick Owens Fall 2011: Take Us to a Nunnery Posted: 04 Mar 2011 10:30 AM PST "Take thee to a nunnery," Hamlet said to Ophelia in William Shakespeare's famous play. That's what Rick Owens seemed to be telling Hanne Gaby as she walked down with a knitted hood covering most of her head. She wore a cape, black on the outside, white on the inside, thrown back over her shoulders, a mid-calf skirt and platforms. The rest of the girls came marching down in what is now known as a distinctively Rick Owens's look: long layer upon long layer, deconstructed tops and platform – and the recurring pairing of wool and leather.
