Things That Creep Us Out from the New Issue of Vogue Enfants Posted: 23 Mar 2011 06:36 AM PDT On the whole, French Vogue supplement Vogue Enfants is a gem for parents and children alike. It features cute clothes and accessories for kids (some that I wish were made for adults!) and this issue has a lovely interiors section that highlights four of the most perfectly precious designs for kids’ bedrooms (think Margot’s room in The Royal Tenenbaums). But after reviewing the issue, Lauren, Leah and I all felt a little uncomfortable after looking at some of the images, both ads and editorials. Among the images in question are a little girl doing her best impression of a moody Freja in the Beauté section (another good question: a beauty section for toddlers? why?), and a tween model posing provocatively with her mouth agape. Maybe we don’t get it because of our Puritan mentality (Vogue Enfants is French after all but then again TLC puts out a popular show called Toddlers and Tiaras), or maybe it’s that seeing children modeling like they’re adults–adults who are supposed to be sexy–is just plain unsettling. The residual bad taste in our mouths may be leftover from the Vogue Paris December 2010 playfully perverse editorial featuring little girls in big-girl clothing and heaps of makeup. What do you think, are these ads and editorials cute or creepy? Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
15 Adorable, Attainable Prom Dresses Posted: 22 Mar 2011 04:00 PM PDT Even if your dream prom dress is a Chanel suit, most high school seniors don’t have the funds to make those doubleCCs happen. So we’ve put together a list of our favorite prom-worthy dresses at attainable price points. (And if you’re like us, aka way too old to go to the prom, these are also lovely for formal occasions.) Posted: 22 Mar 2011 03:14 PM PDT Janice Celeste, Sessilee Lopez‘s mom, has written a guide book for parents of budding supermodels called Making a Supermodel, which she self-published on Lulu.com. She’s dubbed herself a “super momager,” and the book details lessons she learned about the modeling industry as she helped manage her daughter to supermodel success. “I am writing this book because I want to help other parents help their daughters become high fashion models,” she writes. “Parents often message me on Facebook to ask for advice on how to get their teens into modeling, and many have no idea what it really takes.” Celeste started her daughter off when she was just 12, and used her last pay check after she lost her job to take her daughter to New York to go on open castings. The risk obviously paid off. And Celeste learned a lot about being a “super momager” along the way. Some of the lessons and words of wisdom Celeste imparts are obvious, some are funny, and some are a bit tawdry. So we combed through the 70 page tome to bring you the best parts: Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
A Peek Inside Carine’s Final Vogue Paris Posted: 22 Mar 2011 01:30 PM PDT Carine Roitfeld’s tenure over Vogue Paris was dramatic, to say the least, and her final issue as EIC does not disappoint. Starring the androgynous model of the moment, Saskia de Brauw, on the cover shot by Mert and Marcus, Roitfeld’s final Vogue is a testament to all the aspects that made her a beloved editor and stylist. The Best Spring Pedicure Colors Posted: 22 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT The temperature is passing the 50 degree mark here in NYC pretty regularly, so we’ve been breaking out the open-toed booties sans tights. Of course this means neglected toes need a bit of attention. (Stuffing them into scratchy wool socks does not mean you’ve been keeping up with exfoliation, by the way.) The new spring nail colors run the gamut from sheer to sparkly to dark to bright. Whether you like a ladylike pastel or a dark metallic, there’s a color for you. Emma Watson for Alberta Ferretti: The Complete Collection Posted: 22 Mar 2011 11:25 AM PDT Emma Watson‘s capsule collab with Alberta Ferretti, “Pure Threads,” went on sale today at albertaferretti.com. So now you can see the five-piece collection in its entirety. It’s pretty, to be sure–very peasant-y, summery, romantic, etc.,–but also pretty expensive. Prices range from $340 for some denim short shorts with appliques on the sides to $1010 for a dress described as being made of “cloth and lace.” Of course, a portion of proceeds go to benefit People Tree, the fair trade clothing line and manufacturer that Watson supports, having designed two lines for the company in the past. In a behind-the-scenes video of the shoot for the collection, Emma Watson looks at the collection and murmurs, “This is actually like a dream come true.” Would you splurge on any pieces from “Pure Threads”? Humans of New York: A New Spin on Street Style Photography Posted: 22 Mar 2011 11:00 AM PDT Have you ever thought that New York has the most interesting people? You’re not alone. Photographer Brandon Stanton recently started a blog with the specific purpose of highlighting the humans of New York. A former bond trader from Chicago, Stanton gave up his career to move to New York. He says the project has helped him acclimate: "I think my unfamiliarity with the city helps the project, actually. I’m constantly being told the type of people I should be photographing if I really want to capture ‘New York.’ New York to me is what passes me on the street everyday." And he claims that we aren't that rude after all. (Thank you!) Brandon has had the opportunity to photograph 1,723 people so far (including Barack Obama, Anna Wintour and that random guy who lives down the street). Wondering how I can possibly make it onto his site, I decided to ask Brandon a few questions: Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Beauty Mysteries Solved and Theories Debunked In New Beauty Brains Book Posted: 22 Mar 2011 10:00 AM PDT Whether you love everything beauty or just swipe on the occasional bronzer, you should be reading The Beauty Brains, a website run by cosmetic scientists. In it, the anonymous scientists, called the Left Brain and the Right Brain, answer readers' questions about everything beauty related: products, old wives' tales, trends, ingredients, beauty advertising. And they're not afraid to name names. They're not trying to sell anything, so they have the luxury of being able to offer unbiased opinions and advice. And the best part? The advice is based in science and they have a cynical eye which allows them to see through the beauty advertising that sucks a lot of us in. It's truly fascinating, and you won't look at your products the same way. Every time something crosses my desk, I reference this site to check out the Brains' take on the claims and ingredients.
