John Galliano Runway Show Canceled Posted: 04 Mar 2011 06:50 AM PST Up until this morning, every major news outlet was reporting that Sunday’s runway show for John Galliano‘s namesake collection would indeed go on. But now the disgraced designer’s press office is saying that the catwalk has been downgraded to a presentation. Balmain Fall 2011: Confusion Amidst the Opulence Posted: 04 Mar 2011 06:00 AM PST Every runway show ends the same way: all the models walk the finale and then the designer emerges, waves, and darts off. After Balmain‘s fall 2011 show, there was an awkward silence as the label’s creative director, Cristophe Decarnin, failed to appear. Buyers and editors sat in their seats as the lights came up instead of making a beeline for the door. The question on everyone’s mind: Where was Cristophe Decarnin? According to WWD, “the designer was absent under doctor's orders, after having recently been released from the hospital, where he was said to have been treated for depression. A Balmain spokesman said Decarnin was involved in the design.” The news of Decarnin’s absence due, reportedly, to depression shouldn’t completely overshadow the clothes that came down the runway. Guy Laroche Fall 2011: Mixing Fur and Minimalism Posted: 04 Mar 2011 05:30 AM PST For the fur-loving fashionista who fears PETA’s red paint, Guy Laroche‘s Marcel Marongiu has the perfect solution: red fur. Sheared fur dresses, skirts, tops, and coats, in red, white, black, and putty, capped off with a couple of gorgeous silver beaded dresses were the highlights of Marongiu’s fall collection for Laroche. For the most part, the collection was comprised of perfectly wearable separates: leather skirts and pants, wool-and-sheared-fur overcoats, and wide-buckle belts over simple sheaths. At times it looked a bit pre-Theyskens Theory though (and some ripped knits of a pom-pom sweater variety veered into grunge grandma territory), until the luxe fur looks–I swooned over the red fur dress–stepped it up a notch. Marongiu made fur almost (almost) seem minimalist. And that’s a good thing. Sacai Fall 2011: The Debut Show Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:10 PM PST Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt. PARIS–"At the very beginning, knits were the bases of the concept, but since then, it has been about merging various types of categories, such as the trench, the bomber jacket, or the biker jacket, or a classic men’s knit pull-over or cardigan sweatercombined with a skirt or a skirt and a cardigan and so forth," said Chitose Abe following the second of her three mini shows this morning inside the courtyard of the Hotel d'Evreux. Ms. Abe, who established Sacai in 1999 after either years of working with Junya Watanabe at Comme des Garçons, has been presenting in Paris over the past few years. But it was her first time doing a small live presentation, with models wearing everything from a beige fringed knit and a brown short skirt, to a flared sleeve cable knit sweater with a sleeveless pull-over trench and a feather skirt, to an asymmetrical cable knit skirt with chiffon underlay and a sleeveless cotton tank and fur aviator collar. Hussein Chalayan Fall 2011: Japanese Influence and a Floating Dress Posted: 03 Mar 2011 02:30 PM PST PARIS–For fall 2011, Hussein Chalayan again presented a film, picking up where he left off last season, exploring Japanese culture within the DNA he’s established over the past ten years. But it’s not the kind of literal Japanese influence you might envision–no obis or kimono sleeves here. This season’s film, Kaikoku, means “open country” in Japanese. “After the period of isolation Sakoku in Japan [Chalayan's fashion film for Spring 2011], the country experienced and openness to Western culture which over the years has influenced the food, fashion, art, architecture and technology while the country has still remained distinctly Japanese,” his line sheets explained. “It looks like it took two seconds, but it took forever,” Chalayan said of his film at the intimate screening his sponsor, Swarovski, held at a gallery in the Marais yesterday. “Next season, hopefully will be a show.” (We’re keeping our fingers crossed.) What you see above, is the special museum piece called the Floating Dress that Chalayan created in collaboration with Swarovski. The technology that went into this piece–a gold spray painted shell that the model steps into–is staggering. It’s remote controlled, and those little crystal pollens attached to it are all spring loaded to individually release via remote control as well. “The dress symbolizes new beginnings,” Chalayan said. “It can move and go on a journey.” Chalayan can always be counted on to take his audience–whether fashion people or an art crowd–on a journey. Exclusive Video: Backstage at Kevork Kiledjian’s Debut Fashion Show Posted: 03 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PST
As guests filed into Milk Studios for Kevork Kiledjian‘s debut collection this past February during New York Fashion Week, front row fixtures like Julia Restoin Roitfeld and Leigh Lezark caused a stir with paparazzi. But backstage was where all the real action was at, and we’ve got the exclusive footage. Fashion photographer Nicholas Routzen turned the pre-show chaos into art in this black and white behind-the-scenes video. He filmed hairstylists and MAC makeup artists transforming models, and seamstresses putting last minute touches on the garments. PR people yelled into their headsets, and the made up models adorned in Tom Binns jewelry posed for polaroids before hurrying to their spot in line, ready for the show to begin. Posted: 03 Mar 2011 01:15 PM PST Angels clad in sequin mini-dresses appeared at the Victoria’s Secret store in SoHo earlier this week to celebrate the launch of the new Incredible Bra collection and fragrance. Chanel Iman, Adriana Lima, Erin Heatherton, Lily Aldridge, and Candice Swanepoel greeted guests and posed for pictures as we discovered what's so "incredible" about the lingerie brand's new products. Limi Feu Fall 2011: Beyond Rock & Roll Posted: 03 Mar 2011 12:30 PM PST Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt. PARIS–I remember meeting Ms. Limi Yamamoto at Yohji Yamamoto‘s Tokyo headquarters over three years ago. She spoke with such conviction about how much rock music has influenced her life and her designs. For Limi, it gave her a way to distinguish her own designs from her father’s, who certainly casts a massive shadow over her work. But at yesterday afternoon’s show, Limi demonstrated that she no longer requires rock to be inspired. As the soft sound of piano and the occasional bagpipe wafted out of the speakers, a model emerged in a light grey wool cropped biker jacket with matching shorts, worn with a long print cotton shirt and pants. The designer focused on her training in pattern making in a collection that played on volumes and shapes. “I began with a piece of square fabric to see how many different shapes I could make from it,” she said. Image of the Day: Bob Gaudette Captures Autumn Kendrick For Photographer and Muse Posted: 03 Mar 2011 12:01 PM PST
In our opinion, the best thing in the world is when an editorial looks effortlessly sexy and cool at the same time. Photographer Bob Gaudette‘s spread of Canadian model Autumn Kendrick (Chantale Nadeau / Ford Toronto / Folio Montreal) accomplishes just that. And we’re obsessed. Balmain’s Christophe Decarnin Reportedly Hospitalized for Depression Posted: 03 Mar 2011 11:49 AM PST Before she left for the Nina Ricci show, Leah and I were discussing Balmain over GChat. Her review will be published later on today, but it wasn’t the clothes that we were talking about. It was the fact that designer Christophe Decarnin was MIA at the show: Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Rochas Fall 2011: For the Ladies Who Lunch Posted: 03 Mar 2011 10:45 AM PST PARIS–For fall, Rochas‘ Marco Zanini presented a collection full of super luxe staples that looked tailor made for the closet of any Upper East Side old lady who lunches. There were perfect cashmere coats that hung just-so to reveal the collarbone, simple suiting and a-line skirts in gray-blue shantung paired with crew neck cashmere sweaters which were striped, printed, and raglan in deep plums and navy. A tight swirly floral print that you might find wallpapering your grandmother’s salon (if you had a grandmother who would have a salon) showed up on on pants, jackets, and cocktail dresses. But while Rochas’ lady is mature and refined, she’s also got a sense of humor, exhibited by her choice in millinery: funny little fur hats perched atop her head, or a crocheted bonnet.
